Seperate multiple hard drives
My new dimension comes with two 250 Gbyte hard drives but "my computer" shows them as one 500 Gbyte drive. How can I get these seperated so that I can use on as back up on the other. My previous computers using windows 98SE have always shown each hard drive seperately. Any ideas?

Depending on what you are doing with the drives, there is a significant performance increasing using the striping of RAID 0. That being said however, I just now changed by RAID setup to "JBOD" (Just a Bunch Of Drives) for the same reason as you. There are many products that you can use, but I used Ghost 10.0 and backed it up onto my double layer DVD. Got it all on a single DVD! Then I physically disconnected the second drive, went in and set up the RAID in BIOS as a single drive array and restored the data. Next I turned the second drive and again went into the RAID in BIOS and set it up as a second RAID array of size 1.
Did not have to reload Windows separately. The nice thing is that I did not have to change drivers to run the drive after the restore, because it was still a RAID 0 array of size 1. ;-)
I just did this two days ago. Believe me, I learned the hard way several things not to do. At first, I turned off the RAID completely and tried to load as single drives with both turned on. I then restored, but it would blue screen before completing the boot. So I brought up the Windows XP disk and started installing the OS as a Repair. But the installation and repair took an additional 30 minutes. So I backed down and set up as a single RAID array and restored. Then it booted fine. After letting it all come up again, I shut down and brought up the next drive in a separate array.
