SM Bus Controller-exclamation point--installing chipset driver again didn't work--what does it need?

This laptop quit a month ago.   I wiped the hard drive, reinstalled from the original disks the OS and drivers, using the 2 recommended updated drivers from the web page. Beside Vista it now has Office 2010, Vipre internet security & malware bytes on it.  I tried to update to IE 9 but I thought  it slowed down so I restored to the original IE 7.

Perhaps the slowness was actually from this problem instead of IE 9, though. Before I could check into slowness, it froze, the wheel spinning eternally with no Ctrl-Alt-Del rescue possible.

I had to use a Kaspersky boot disk to get in and am in safe mode now looking at Device Manager.  After reading the forum answers, I installed the chip set driver again.  SM Bus Controller is still marked as a problem.  BUT---Two unknown OTHER (unknown) devices were repaired.  Yay!!!!

HOWEVER----

SM Bus Controller says no drivers installed--and says to reinstall drivers.  " Driver detail" says there are no drivers required!!   I am confused.

I tried going to hardware ID as some others in this forum did and got this:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&SUBSYS_02BW1028&REV_03

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930&SUBSYS_02BW1028

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930CC_0C0500

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2930CC_0C05

This just led to drivers, I guess.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Maybe this problem is what caused the laptop to die in the first place?

I appreciate you guys who step in and share your expertise!  Thanks ..

Hi Thechilidog,

Let's start with the model of your Dell. What's the error under the SM bus controller?

It sounds like he installed Windows and then did not install the drivers in the proper order.

And then went on to do all sorts of crazy stuff which confuses the heck out of me.

Hi-

Thanks for the response.  I am trying to figure out the error.

SM Bus Controller dialog box 1 says no drivers installed--and says to reinstall drivers.  I tried automatically searching for a driver--no luck.  Dialog box 2 -- " Driver detail" --says there are no drivers required!!

Nothing is identified as a problem anywhere else in remaining views, option of that dialog box.

What I Installed in order was :

1. Dell Support Center R221537

2. Quickset--I thought it was Dell software since it was listed with their Apps to do first, but later found out it should have come later.

3. Bios--checked but it was checked in the drivers installation disk as being already installed so I moved on

4. Chipset--also checked as already installed, so I moved on --trying to install led to message "this file is equal to file already installed"

5.SATA  R250352

6 Audio R261324

7 Video --checked as already done, as recognized by the drivers installation disk

8 Network (Broadcom) R2000062

9 quickset--did earlier

10 Wireless network manager R202467

11 Bluetooth--skipped--not using bluetooth devices so I figured I didn't need it

12 Mouse-keyboard---skipped---no drivers recommended or available

13 Intel Vpower ----skipped--it is used for generating reports for business and won't be used

14 Dell wireless mobile broadband--after installation I received message this" requires .net framework 3.5 SP 1 or greater"  This message disappeared after SP 2 was installed

15 Modem drivers--skipped for now--not using 56K modem--there were several of those

16 Touch screen--skipped--not in Studio 1555

ALSO--After problems arose--- I tried installing a modem driver but it said something like 'no response'--it probably needs an external one attached?

ALSO--When all 3 items in Device Manager listed under OTHER had exclamation points on them, I installed the chipset driver again.

As a result 2 marked items disappeared under OTHER and only the exclamation marked SM Bus Controller remained.

This is all I see as a problem, now.

Do I need to scrub the disk and start all over?  !!!  I have done that once, already!

PS

I may have misidentified some of the items in the list giving the order to install things. For instance,  I never installed the Diagnostics driver which is on the Drivers disk-- --but maybe it was considered Dell software to be installed first?

Also---There are some other things I can't identify on the drivers disk which I didn't use--like card readers & mini cards, but I assume I don't need them since I am not using a card reader or a mini-card--unless that is the little card that looks like an SD on the right side???  Not using it yet since I don't know what it is!

Please go to my link below to the reinstallation guide. Philip provides the proper order of driver installation. The SM bus controller drive is part of the chipset drivers. Without knowing the model, it's hard for me to know exactly what's going wrong.

The BIOS and the diagnostics are not drivers and do not need to be installed.

Those are Intel devices; you can download Intel's chipset software installer straight from Intel's site and it will install the correct drivers. Intel has an online utility for that purpose, but there's also a standalone installer.

AFAIK early versions of XP required drivers to be installed in a certain order, but I never had that issue with Vista. You should be able to correct your chipset driver issue without having to uninstall anything else.

Looks like you have no chipset driver.

Dell have a major problem with their Service Tags. Your system should have far more than 2 drivers and is hence missing many critical ones which should apply to it. Do not use a service tag to download drivers.

As mentioned state your model so we can help you further.

As its Windows Vista ensure you have it update to Service Pack 2, check this in system properties (right click computer and select properties).

If not install the standalone service packs:

64 Bit: Service Pack 1 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 9 Microsoft Security Essentials Latest Definition

32 Bit: Service Pack 1 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 9 Microsoft Security Essentials Latest Definition

Then install the latest Dell System Software:

64 Bit: http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER88660M/8/Dell_System-Software_A06_R282537.exe

32 Bit: http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER88644M/7/Dell_System-Software_A06_R282536.exe

And as its an Intel Chipset get the latest version from Intel:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility
