SYSRECOVERY USB drive write protected?

Made a factory recovery usb key, but now want to wipe that data and use the usb for a full backup.  How do I unlock it?

Kingston Data Traveler 2.0 USB

Thanks, in advance.

Yes, it's the Kingston Data Traveler USB 2.0. I made a factory backup bootable key using the Dell Backup/Recovery utility. (Inspiron 3247 2-in1) Now I want to use the USB key for something else but the utility made it read only and write protected.

Hi jteague1906,

The factory recovery USB key was made using what? I assume you're trying to format it, but are you getting some sort of error?

Mistyped:  My machine is an Inspiron 3147 2-in-1 convertible.

I understand why the utility would make a "locked" USB key, what I don't understand is why the utility won't let you re-do, clear or re-write on a previously used key.  And no, it doesn't have a "write protect" slider...

Mr. Google produced lots of info on how to wipe a write protected USB, but they all require a 3rd party software or use the command prompt (diskpart) to reassign volumes, etc., to varying degrees of success.  Worst case is making the USB drive a micro-paperweight and I certainly don't want to kill it.
