System Won't Recognize New HDD

Has the drive been partitioned and formated?

I was trying to partition and format it with the MaxBlast installation software that came with the HDD but I can't seem to access the HDD.  I did run through the tutorial but when "clicking" on the new drive I couldn't select it.

Check your jumper settings on the hard drive. Should be set for cable

The jumper is set to cable select.  In Drive Manager the Maxtor HDD shows up as "healthy" but it doesn't have a drive letter.  I can't seem to get it to partition or format it.  I have logged in as Administrator.  When I right click nothing is recognized.  My bios Primary Master is set to Auto.

I had the same problem. At start hit F2, it takes you to Setup. turn primarydrive 0 off, turn primary drive 1 to auto. Save changes and exit. Put your reinstall windows disk in cd drive. Reboot, this time hit F12, it takes yoiu to reboot menu. Set reboot from cd drive. Reboot, and windows set up will detect new drive and follow format instruction. When finished Reboot and go to F2 set up and turn bsck primary drive 0 to auto and reboot from hard drive.

You might have that backwards, the primary drive is 0 which should be set to auto, and the added hard drive is 1 which is set to off and the settigs should be set to off. It doesn't have and operating system on it. That is the way mine is set up. I have only 1 operating system on the 0 drive and the other is just for backup.  Michael

Still no joy.  I made the the Prmary AUTO and turned off the SATA HDD.  The PC still didn't recognize the new 40 HDD.  I couldn't boot up using the startup disk because an error message said no hard drive was present.

Any more suggestions?  I appreciate everyone's assistance so far.

Do you have the cables setup correctly? Black to master; Gray to slave. You can also try WD Data Lifeguards V11 DOS to set up the drive.

I bet you will find the answer faster at this site then here. I have 2 WD hard drives. I would guess that it is in the way the bios are reading the jumper settings. Wish I could help more, I certainly identify with computer frustration.  Michael

you have  to boot from cd drive. If you do that and bootup disk dosn't detect the hdd then double check the jumper. Maxtor have several jumper configration. make sure you are  looking at the right one.
