The difference between DVD-R & DVD-RW & DVD+R & DVD+RW

I have a dell xps system,am using windows xp. I want to start  transferring my home movies to DVD's but I am totally confused as to what the difference is between DVD-R &   DVD-RW  and  DVD+R  &  DVD +RW

These are my drives: 8x DVD+R/RW CD-RW combination Drive

                                   16x DVD ROM Drive

(Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E)  (NEC DVD +RW ND- 2100AD)

hope this helps determine what I am talking about

also any suggestions as to what brand may be the best performer for  transferring?

Thanks for any & all help

Hi Norma,

For information on the two formats, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 7-1.
To make things easier for you, your NEC 2100, which is the burner, requires the DVD+R and DVD+RW media, it will not write to the DVD-R & DVD-RW media.
It will write to CD-R & CD-RW media. There are no CD+R & CD+RW media.
The Samsung 616E is your DVD-ROM (read only).
For the User Guide on these drives, same CD/RW link, Section 5-4.

Best Regards

Hi

I also have the NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD. If I record a movie onto a blank DVD+R disc will I be able to view that disc on all DVD players?

Hi Mick,

I cannot say with good faith my friend that it will work on all DVD players, I truly wish I could but way too factors, brand, models, disc, manufactures, old, new, etc...

I guess this is one of the main reasons the Regulars recommend a dual format drive to try and cover as much as possible.

Best Regards
