Transferring files to new computer
How do you transfer files/folders from an old computer to a new computer? Does it matter that the old computer runs W98 and the new computer runs XP? I tried looking at the microsoft boards but they're down right now. Also, I'm sorry if I'm asking on the wrong board.

There are plenty of ways to bring the files over, and which way you decide will be a matter of available methods and your personal preferences.
1) floppy disk (ugh)
2) zip disk (if both systems have a zip drive, still "ugh")
3) USB "jump" drive (better, drivers must be installed on both systems, I think)
4) CDRW (if the old system has a CDBurner)
5) Crossover cable between old and new systems (both systems must have a NIC/ethernet card)
6) Move the old system's hard disk to the "slave" position in the new system, then drop and drag files/folders.
I've probably missed something such as parallel cable transfer or serial transfer, but they're older and really slow. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, using the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard it the easiest . . especially combined with networking the two pc's via eithernet

I would use NVRambo's method #6, install the old drive as slave and transfer files by drag and drop or copy and paste.

last night we put the xp cd in the old computer, it didn't give us the option to use the ethernet. It only gave us the option to use cable to cable using the com ports. We actually have a cable to cable thing. How long is it supposed to search for the settings and files? It was still searching after about 30 minutes. Are we just being impatient? Also, can you please give me step by step instructions on how to set up a "slave" drive? Thank you so much for your help!

I'm not wrs, but to set up your slave drive, set the jumpers (they are little pins on the back of the drive, with a two pin connector across them) to C/S = cable select, and plug the drive into the middle connector on the flat IDE cable your hard drive is connected to(it will only fit one way). You should have a four pin power connector close by, you can plug into the four pins on the drive(it will also only fit one way). If you are careful and don't move the machine around, and this is only a temporary setup, you can just let the drive set on the bottom of the case, or where ever the cable will let it hang, just be sure it does not come into contact with the motherboard... Be careful... Reboot and Windows should recognize the drive and assign it a drive letter. Go to My Computer and open the now new drive and your existing 'C' drive and you can transfer files/folders from one to the other... Be sure to turn power off any time you are connecting or disconnecting the drive or power connectors.

Thanks for the instructions. I have to admit it sounds a little complicated. My husband ended up buying some program to do the dirty work for him. We'll see how that goes... Anyway thanks.

I just got a new 120 MB HD and was trying to install it on my 8100 running XP but had problems because of some IDE issue (computer can only accept 4); I am thinking of just using the new HD and not the old, but then have to transfer all the files over. Do I have to install XP and operating system files on the new HD, or can I just drag them over, or even better, just tell the computer to copy all form drive to drive? thanks
