Unable to boot Windows XP
I have a problem. Windows XP worked just fine on my computer before, but now it has simply refused to work. The way this problem occurred is through the power saving mode (not the hibernation mode). I left the computer on for about 25-40 minutes, then tried to awaken it by pressing keys on the keyboard, but it refused to respond, and the screen remained black. After pressing more buttons, it made a beeping sound, and I was forced to shut down the laptop via the power button.
But after turning the laptop on after the forced shutdown, Windows XP wouldn't load up properly. It won't boot in any type of safe mode, and it won't boot in normal mode either. All it does is get to the Windows XP loading screen (the one where the Windows symbol along with the loading bars are over the black screen), then restarts to the Dell loading screen.
After running the diagnostics programs included, I got these messages:
Start DST Short Test: Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146
Msg: Unit 0: DST Log contains previous errors.
(This is from the initial test, when booting directly from the diagnostics program)
This other result is from running the symptom tree test, under the "Cannot Boot the OS" category, after testing the IDE Read Test test:
Error Code: 0F00:0244
Msg: Block 2330277: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.
Any help or solutions to this problem would be appreciated greatly.

It worked just fine up until that point which it entered the power saving mode, and it has never had problems before with the power-saving mode. I used it only an hour or two before it stopped working.

I have almost the exact same problem as yours.
My windows just won't book after a power saving mode.
and the diagnostics program also show error messages..
when it try to reboot, it was in the windows loading screen for long time, like 15 min. So... powered off at that.. (although I don't I shouldn't... )
now.. I just need to recover some data back for the drive.
Thanks for ejn63 reply. it seems we can do it.
Would you tell me what is a converter cable? you mean a cable that convert 2.5" HDD to 3.5" HDD ?
can I get a normal external USB HD enclosure to do it?
Because I just got an external USB enclosure.. it doesn't seem to work.
Thanks
