Upgrading capacity in Raid 1 configuration

I have a Dell Dimension E520 with two SATA disks in a Raid 1 configuration.  I want to move to larger disks and keep a Raid 1 configuration.  There must be a way to do this upgrade without reinstalling Windows and all my applications.  The sequence of steps appears to be very critical.  Does anyone have a procedure to follow to accomplish this task?

Use a utility like Acronis True Image in conjunction with an external drive that's large enough to hold an image of the entire system.  Make the image, and TEST THE BOOT CD TO BE SURE the image is accessible for restore.  In fact, make TWO images to be safe.

 

Remove the original drives, build the new array on the new drives, and restore the image.

Thank you for your response.  I need some clarification, which may lead to my buying 2 or 3 new drives.  Unless you tell me I am wrong, here are the steps I will follow:

  1. Remove one of my current raid disks for safe keeping, and add one of my new drives to an unused SATA port (not in raid).
  2. Use a tool, (my preference is Ghost) to image my system disk to the new drive.
  3. Remove old system disk and verify I can boot from new disk (not in raid).  Can I configure it to boot from a disk other than port 0?  Even if, as in the next step, there is a unbootable disk installed in the raid?
  4. Install blank new disk in one of the raid positions.  On boot, go into the configuration utility and configure the new size disk(s) as a raid level 1 with only one disk installed.  If I need two disks here, then I will need to purchase three new drives to accomplish this upgrade.
  5. Boot from my non-raid new disk, which will also set up the raid data on the new blank disk.  This is my second fuzzy step.  Will it make the raid data area without having 2 disks in the raid?
  6. Use the tool to image the boot disk back to the raid.  Do you have any idea what drive letters they will be?
  7. Remove the non-raid boot disk and see if the system boots from the raid and I have all my data and programs.
  8. Re-mount the non-raid disk and, after booting from the raid, initialize the temporary boot disk.  Is this step necessary to force the raid catch-up to copy in the correct direction?
  9. Re-mount the just initialized disk as the second disk in the raid.
  10. Boot and let the raid catch up.
  11. Restart the PC to make sure I have a working and bootable raid.

If you can answer my questions or fix the procedure, it will help me and, I am sure, other interested people.

My last post must have been too long, since no one answered my questions, so here are just my questions.  Can someone please answer them?  I have a Dell Dimension E520 with a Raid, level 1, for the system disk(s).

  1.  Is it possible to boot from a hard disk that is not the lowest numbered SATA port if there is a non-bootable disk installed in the lowest numbered SATA port?
  2. When I add a disk to a raid 1 configuration, how does the system know which is the "good" disk, i.e. which direction to copy when the raid is catching up?
With these two questions answered, I will have the confidence to buy my new hard disks and will update my procedure so others who want to upgrade their mirrored system disks can use it.

The algorithm I proposed does NOT work, however, the upgrade is easy to do.  Unfortunately, DELL support knew nothing about how their RAID works and misdirected me.  The real solution is quite simple and straight forward as follows:

  1. Power off the computer and temporarily mount the new disk in a spare SATA port.
  2. Go into BIOS and enable the newly used SATA port
  3. In Windows (or your favorite OS) use your favorite software to clone your system disk onto your new disk, letting partitions expand.  I used MaxBlast, which is a version of Acronis True Image that was packaged with the Maxtor drive I purchased.
  4. Power down your computer and remove the original disk drives.  Put the newly cloned drive in Port 0 and the other new drive in Port 1.
  5. Go into the BIOS and disable the additional SATA port that you previously enabled.
  6. On power up, you will need to hit F1 to boot to windows.
  7. Open up  the Intel Matrix Storage Console (from Start/Programs/...)
  8. Select View/Advanced Mode
  9. Select the command to Action/"Create a RAID Volume from an existing hard drive", and follow the instructions.
If you want to re-use your old drives, then mount them in the spare SATA port, and in the Intel Matrix Storage Console, select the command under the Action menu to remove the RAID information from the degraded disk.  The command was instantaneous and, contrary to the warning, did not erase the data.
