Upper and Lower Filters Missing

My PC is a Dell Inspiron 530

Operating System is Windows Vista Ultimate

My CD/DVD is PBDS DVD+RW DH-16W1S ATA

At some point in the past I removed Roxio Creator MyDVD 9.0 DE

I then upgraded my I tunes to Version 8.2

When I ran I tunes it gave me the message " No Drivers in Upper Filters and No Drivers in Lower Filters. No External Plugs-ins Installed.  Error -43"

My CD drive will now not detect an Audio CD, nor can I burn to a CD. I can still use the Drive to install Games.

I'm assuming that removing Roxio Creator has also removed the required filter registry settings ?

I have followed the Microsoft knowledge base to look into the registry settings for the CD drive and there is no mention of Upper or Lower Filters in the Registry.

I have trawled through the Dell community problems forums but not found anything which helps me directly, although some descriptions of problems closely relate to my problem, but not exactly. Most solutions refer to Windows XP.

How can I restore my Registry settings to include the required Upper and Lower Filter entries for the CD\DVD drive ?

Any help would be much appreciated. It's driving me crazy as I've tried many options but all have failed.

Hi, John:

Not surprisingly, Apple tech support is the best place for getting help with iTunes. Try that and let me know if you are still having trouble.

Hi, Thanks for your quick response. I followed the Apple procedures (which is similar to the Microsoft procedures for this problem), but I get the same result.

When I go into the Registry at the point described by Apple regarding the Upper and Lower Filters there are no Filters there so I cannot carry out the procedure for deleting and modifying as described, and yet the problem is exactly as described in the Apple notice you sent to me!

What next ?

John:

If you uninstall and  reinstall iTunes it should reinstall the filters.

Hi Osprey,

I've used the repair facility on Uninstall/Install in Windows, also I've uninstalled and reinstalled I Tunes but it does not reinstall the Filters . I think they may have to be reinstalled manually or from a Dell untilities disc ???  I've run out of ideas.

Regards

John

Hi Osprey,

Do you have any further thoughts on my missing filters and how I can get back the registry settings to allow me to burn CD's and play Audio CD's ?

Hi, John:

Sorry for not getting back. Unike the old forum, there is no easy way to tell if anyone has added a reply to a thread I am active in.

I found this post in the Apple forums. The procedure described will add an UpperFilter key to your registry.

I tried to do a  i tunes repair, that did not work.  I also did the apple fix where you remove the upper and lower filter  in registry.

I got to this point:

  1. Right-click the LowerFilters key and from the shortcut menu, click Delete. Note: If you don't see a LowerFilters key then continue to the next step.
  2. Right-click the UpperFilters entry and from the shortcut menu, click Modify.

The problem is I don't have UpperFilters, so the I am dead in the water.

For your XP machine, use the "Fix it" button and everything will be done automatically.

For your W-7 machine, follow the "code 39 error" article in the CD/DVD FAQ for Vista.

If you still need help, do me a favor and describe the exact problem you are having or start a new thread. Please keep in mind that an iTunes problem is not really a CD/DVD problem. The best place to get help for iTunes problems is the iTunes forum (link in my toolbox below).
