Viewing other harddrive and adding another

To start if it matters, I have a Dimension 4100 and Windows XP Pro, I'm using currently a MAXTOR D740X-6L 80GB hard drive.

From a friend I got a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and I want to burn some files off of it to a CD before I reformat and erase the whole thing, but when I plug it into the system and remove my current hard drive windows won't boot up, they had Windows XP Home...A while ago I connected another persons harddrive and it loaded up Windows 95 just fine...I'm confused about that.

Can someone tell me how to successfully connect the DiamondMax so it will boot?

Problem 2 is that AFTER I burn those files I want to reformat and erase the hard drive, how? A friend of mine added a second hard drive and used it as raw space, I'm assuming thats what a slave drive is, I don't have much experience in this field of computers. How do I go about doing that after reformatting?

Well that's about it, I apologize if I sound like an idiot but like I said I have NO experience in this field of computers, so try to use as little acronyms and abbreviations as possible...thanks in advance

Hi,

With the power off, remove the top.

Take anti static precautions by grounding yourself once you take the top off

Set the jumper on the rear of the "new" drive to Cable Select.

Then add this drive as a slave device on the middle connector of either IDE ribbon cable in your machine.

With the product activation Win XP has the hard disk you are trying to add is looking for the hardware configuration from the computer the drive was removed from. As it does not find it. It has problems.

Once you have copied the files you want to CD. You can simply reformat the drive from My Computer.
