what is difference between primary and logical partition??

if i want to split my hard drive into 2 partitions with one 10gb for windows XP and the rest 40GB for data (music, videos, games etc.) what partition type should i use for the data?? primary or logical? what is the difference between the two??

i recently used partition magic 8 to split the drives, however after that there was an error about some C$/s... and told me to do a chkdsk /f, which i did, and now its alright, however i find the laptop a bit slow now, espcially when right clicking on a folder takes 2 seconds.

should i reformat my laptop? i only just got it 2 days ago. do most people reformat their dells when they recieve it or leave it as what dell has already install??

I would start over and this time boot to the XP cd and let it handle the partitioning - remove all and create your 2 desired ones at the sizes you want.  Leaving off the AOL, Earthlink, and other add ons helps streamline and saves hdd space.

primary partition is bootable, and logical partition isn't, every logical partition eat up 31.5K(1 track) disk space. You can create 4 primary partition w/o logical partition, or 3 primary w/ unlimited logical partition.
