What is the difference in DVD+R and DVD-R Media disks?

What is the difference in the disks mentioned in my subject line. Is it just a play on words like the CD-R's for data and CD-R's for music? Or maybe I am wrong about that one, too!

Hi Bessie,

I dropped you a Private Message a while back about one of your previous posts.

As for the DVD+ or -, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 7-1, article 7 from Mike, this should cover most of it.

Seasons Greetings !

Thanks, Predator, but I still can't find the answer to my question.  I know the difference between "R"  and "RW".  It is the "Media" part that has me confused.  When a store advertises DVD+R and DVD-R Media disks as different items I wonder which ones to buy!  I was told a long time ago the CD-R data disks and the CD-R music disks are really the same.  Your article 7 did not seem to cover that Media part.

Hi Bessie,

OK, do not apply information in regards to CD-R data / CD-R Music to the DVD standard, The DVD+R/RW & DVD-R/RW are two different standards. At first there were either DVD+R/RW drives or DVD-R/RW drives, later came the dual format drive that can use either the "+ or -" DVD media. As to what media you need depends on which format your drive supports. If yours supports writing to both standards, then the next thing to check is which format your home DVD player prefers, if it is a newer model, then you have a good chance of using either, now you can choose depending on cost and availability in your area. However many tend to prefer quality over cost.
If your home player is a little older or plain ol`e picky, then it will be trail`n error with a dual format drive. If you purchased a single format drive, per say DVD+R/RW and all your DVD players prefer are the "DVD-R/RW" media, well up a creek without a paddle comes to mind...

Seasons Greetings !

Thanks, Jeff.  I think I will leave it alone now!  My daughter and her husband have a new 8400 that has a DVD writer of some sort!  I bought an 8400 as well but didn't go with the DVD writer, just the CD-RW drive and DVD-ROM.  My daughter was wanting some blank DVD's and claims they are expensive.  I see an ad at CompUSA for some that are relatively cheap - they come in the two types I show in the subject line.  I was going to get her some for Christmas but I believe I will leave that one for her to figure out.  Sure as I get one kind they will have wanted another.  In fact, at this point, I don't think she even knows which she needs.  I do appreciate your explaination.  Hopefully someone else has benefited from it as well.

Season's Greetings to YOU as well!

Bessie
