Hi PASBEE,

The DVD-R/RW & DVD+R/RW are two different formats, a fair example would be something like the old VHS & Beta. When they first came out, you had to choose one or the other but later vendors produced dual format drives that could write to both formats. The price of the dual drives have dropped so much that the majority of our Regulars would recommend them other a single format drive. For information on the standard, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 7-1.
The Plextor 708a, 712a, Sony`s 530 & 700, NEC 2500 and Pioneer drives have gotten good reviews from our Regulars.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

I've got a Dimension 2350.  According to your Website, I'll either need to find a DVD+R/RW or a DVD+-R/RW.  Correct?  It appears that the + or mixed formats (+/-) are the ones that are compatible with Dell systems.

Will I have any problems if I don't purchase a DVD burner directly from Dell?

I've looked at the specs for the Plextor PX-712A burner, and it seems like a nice burner.  Also, it seems to be on special right now.  I just have to find out if it will handle the capacity of the discs that I need to burn.

I've heard that there may be compatibility issues with hardware not purchased directly from Dell.  No knock there, because I love Dell systems.  Very reliable to me over the years.

Any standard drive is compatible with Dell systems.  DVD drives generally
come in DVD+, DVD- or DVD+/-.  The dual format DVD+/- is most common today.
You will have no problem if you purchase a DVD burner from somewhere
other than Dell.

The Plextor 712 is an excellent drive; perhaps the best.  It is compatible
with Dell systems and very reliable as well.
