is it a combo drive?

I believe the 8X DVD is just a DVD and the 24X CD/DVD is a Combo Drive.
If that makes sense.

Check out the LG External GSA-4120B 12x DVD Burner (CDRW, too).
It's a USB 2.0 and it's considered the best burner so far. You get DVD, CDR + all the extras. AnandTech has a great article on this burner. Good reading.
