Why are writable cd/dvd not being recognized

Hi..I am attempting to burn my first cd/dvd using Roxio Creator DE program which came installed on my Inspiron 1521 Laptop.  However, when I inserted a DVD-RW blank disc into the CD/DVD-ROM drive my SONY CDRWDVD CRX880A ATA DEVICE will not recognize it.  I went to PROPERTIES>DETAILS and it states that the device is working properly.  I have tried everything I can possibly think of to resolve the problem, Dell Support, discussion forums, etc. and still have no idea why this problem is occurring.  I would greatly appreciate it some one could help...Thanks!

With a scratch, blank disc in the drive, boot to the Dell diagnostics, which will test the drive.  If it works there, try uninstalling and reloading Roxio - if not, you'll know there's a hardware issue and will need to replace the drive.

ImKat,

The Sony CRX880A is not a DVD Burner.  It is a Combo drive.
That meand it can read and write CD media, but can only read
DVD media.  It cannot write to DVD media.

Thank you both.  Fortunately I figured out the problem yesterday.  I can only use CD-R & CD-RW for the project I was attempting to perform.  I noticed by reading the forum that a lot of people have run into this same problem.  It would have saved me a lot of time if this information had been available to me to begin with.  The pop up message merely states "Insert DISC into E:/ drive"

You're the one who purchased the system. If you didn't know what you bought, no one else would. Insert DISC into E:/ drive is written that way because the program is capable with working with CDs and DVDs.
