Windows 98 won't recognize second hard drive after reloading windows
All, could use some serious help on this one. System crashed (standard every six months loss of win.com; himem.sys, unable to restore registry, etc.). Data on D drive prior to system crash. Was able to access D drive after crash via dos and was able to move additional files from C drive. Rebuilt system; BIOS sees D drive fine; Windows recognizes D drive as a type 2 drive in control panel; no letter assigned to D drive. Tried starting windows in DOS mode, but still can't access D drive (anyone know how to get directly to DOS on bootup without going through windows at all???).
Anyway, I obviously need to get to my data drive. How do I get windows to talk to the drive? It worked just fine before, and the data was definitely accessible on the D drive after the crash.

You gave us no information about your system. OS? Model?
Both drives are enabled in the BIOS?
Both drives are jumpered master slave for an old system or cable select for newer systems?

Windows 98SE. Jumpers are correct. Both drives worked perfectly before rebuild. BIOS recognizes both drives. Windows recognizes second drive in control panel as a hard disk, but unable to assign letter to drive. Ran vendor diags on second disk--working perfectly.
