windows install on new harddrive,please help

Question

hi i was giving a dell pc that had a bad harddrive so i got me harddrive and went to install os,
when its copying files (just after format) ill get an error message that windows cannot copy file bla bla, I say this cause when i retry and retry the pc well just turn off on its own!! so i reboot reformat and try again then it does it again but only this time and usually everytime its a differant file! Could this be signs of a bad cd-rom?

pc is a dell diminsion 2300
256 ram
segate 160 gig hdd
have everything that came with pc, and all disk

It could be a failing CD/ROM, but more likely, to be a bad XP reinstallation disc.

Have you tried cleaning the CD?

Had the same problem last year, with a Dell OEM XP reinstallation disc, that keeped stopping to request different 'DLL' files.

You could try requesting a replacement copy of windows from Dell.

Hi Jox31r,

You could also check your model of CD and look at Dell Online to see if there's an updated firmware for your drive. Do to ever changing media it's necessary for readers to be updated for reability type issues.

this is the new backup disk from dell,could they of sent me a bad one?

the disk is spotless,and i get the bsod stopcodes is their anything in bios that i'm missing i did set it to boot cd first and disabled usb and it dettects my hard drive and its set on cable select

Yes, the replacement would be a Dell OEM, XP reinstallation disk, but it's possible you may have have to pay for the disc, as it's for an old system.

This you won't know, until you submit the request.

'could they of sent me a bad one?' It's possible the disk was bad, mine was and Dell replaced it.

Have you tried cleaning it?

Well i tried a differant cd-rom, that didn't help. seems like the more i try to install os the more errors come up!

what should the bios settings be? and how can I update it when I can't get it to install os.

I'm a noob at this software stuff!! but I can change any hardware faster than gas prices can empty your wallet!!!lol

Have you disconnected all the peripherals from the system except the keyboard, mouse and monitor?

How to configure a Dell Dimension series system to boot to the CD or DVD drive.

This may help with the reinstall of XP.

yes all things but mouse keyboard and monitor are unhooked, i get the blue screen errors

this is just plain crazy this pc worked great before hardrive prob what can i be doing wrong and how do you disable caching or shadowing like the blue screen says?

here's my error codes plus when it starts it says ntldr is missing press alt-ctrl-del then when it restarts i press f12 and boot from cd to get it going
