Windows ME on second HD

Hi all, If I install a second hard drive with millennium Edition loaded, will it work on my D3000? Sometimes I like running the old Dell Dimension L 800 cxe  with Windows Me, but it is a hassle moving computers around.   Thanks John.

All the ME systems I came in contact with had the bsod problems like W98 did. Maybe my bad luck.

Yes it was a stop gap OS, I think Vista may be also. I really don't like the fact you cannot do a repair install in Vista like you could XP, saved me many times from reinstallation.

Personally, I feel Millennium got a bad rap.  It's main fault was being a holdover till XP was out of Beta and vendors not having much encouragement to write drivers for it.

Provided you had Drivers (You'll note I did qualify this statement) Millennium was a fine OS.  It had some features that no other MS OS had.  You had both System Restore and Scanreg /Restore.  2 totally seperate ways to restore the OS (and with some driver installs you needed it)

It also had all the limitations of WIN98.  You must boot to C:, FAT file system, no integral file system security etc.

You can have 2 operating systems on 2 drives, but the Millennium drive will have to be the C: Drive.

To complicate things, there are no Millennium Drivers for A D3000

ME? WHY?    The worst OS of all time, well Vista may take that title in a few years.

I myself have done a repair reinstall of XP maybe twice, as I see the results of repair reinstalls on a daily basis with my customers and 95% of the time end up reinstalling the OS.

Vista on the otherhand, has been a lot harder to kill, and easier to resurrect.  I love the repair function when you boot to the DVD although sometimes you need 3 or 4 tried before the automated repair can fix all issues and boot to the OS again.

" I love the repair function when you boot to the DVD"

Not really a repair, just a system restore. You have 3 choices, pick a restore point, reinstall using a backup image you created and saved (not all versions), or reinstall completely.

Thanks for your replies, I forgot about the ME drivers not working with D3000. I probably should give this  Dimension L away. John.

"The only real inconvenient part is that to replace multiple missing boot files it may take 3 or 4 attempts for the tool to be completely successful."

Good to know, thanks.

No, there is a lot more that you can do booting to the Vista DVD than you listed.  The startup repair tool can fix a lot of Vista Boot problems on it's own.  The only real inconvenient part is that to replace multiple missing boot files it may take 3 or 4 attempts for the tool to be completely successful.

To JohnDavey:

With all the off topic stuff you might not come back to read this, but if you do, good luck.

My first thought was that you would never make such an installation work, but you should study this thread posted about two years back:

The poster wanted a Windows 98SE installation along with his XP.  If that can be made to work, I'm sure a Win Me installation would work as well.

JackShak,  I was going through the old postings and found yours. Thanks for your reply, the more I looked into trying to install Win Me on Dimension 3000 the less inspired I got. John.

Very happy to help.  Akule (Rod) has been very helpful to folks trying to install older operating systems on the newer machines.  I believe this will come to a halt with the newest machines that use SATA drives, but it would seem that Win 9x is still possible on anything that uses the IDE drive interface.
