Wont Read DVD's

a while ago, i removed sonic cineplayer from my computer, not knowing that this would make all other media-playing software not work properly. since then ive had extreeme trouble being able to watch DVD's. i had it working again for a short while, and then it jsut stopped. ive followed all the posted solutions i could find. like downloading drivers and new media players, but the fact is... my DVD player isnt reading that theres a disk inside it. anything i can do? would downloading sonic cineplayer work to fix this problem? thanks for any help you can give ^_^

There are a couple things you can do in order figure out exactly what is wrong with your drive.

1. Make sure the disks your putting in are compatabile to your drive. If that is the case it will sit and do nothing in the drive.
2. if it is compatabile make sure you see your drive doing activity, this is a sign of showing you that your drive is still operating and is still working.
3. you can see what the computer says about your drive by doing the specific order;
          a. go to my computer and right click on it.
          b. then go to properties within the menu that has been shown
          c. when a window comes on, as the heading it should say "System Poperties"
          d. Find and click on the tab called,"Hardware", it should be the third tab from the left of the first row of tabs.
          e. When you have click on the hardware tap, the first thing on that tap that should appear is the device manager. Click on it.
          f. Now you should see a large list of devices that are currently hooked up to your computer some decives that are not active may show up as well. Find the icon that says DVD or CD Drive.
          g. Now that is the drive that your dvd drive. If there is a symbol of a red "X" on your device that means there is something wrong, such as not working, or not installed properly, etc., if there is a yellow question mark on it then that means that the device is not recognized or the computer doesnt know how to use it.
          h. in order to completely understand what is going on double click on your device that you are having trouble with. A window should appear stating your device as the heading or title bar. In the center of that window there should be something called the Device Status. Here if the device is working properly then it should say the following statement.
                "This device is working properly.
If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter."

If this is the message your case, dont worry about it, click the troubleshoot button. If your device is still not working then your case is more in depth and you should have a diagnosis done on your drive to see if there is a more serious problem. This is for the configuration for the OS of Windows XP both editions. If you have a different operating system i may be able to help.

Does the drive show in My Computer?

When you removed Sonic Cineplayer, you removed the DVD codecs, thus a commercial
movie DVD will not play.  You need to reinstall Cineplayer or PowerDVD.  It is not
available for download because it is a commecial program.

If you do not have the installation disc, you can try some free DVD decoder software
here ...........

Look in the Device Manager .........

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  This will reveal the Brand and Model of
drive.  Please post that.

Also, what model of computer are you using?

When you instert your disk, does anything pop up sucha s a window asking you what to use inorder to read the disk. if it doesnt then go and open my computer, right click on the dvd drive, and check the tab named Auto Play. Find the movie selection on the menu and see if your menu is set to play with Windows Meida Player if it is not then you should set that as your default. If everything is set then go to this link here and follow the on screen insturctions.

then refer to this but you should know three things

            1. Your service tag
            2. your model of the computer
3  Your dvd or cd drive model
If you dont know your dvd or cd drive model then just go to device manager and click on your drive and your info would be the first thing you see on that window after the Title bar.
