Support for running the ECC 6.0 infrastructure on a VMware guest is supposed to be added in the next support matrix. Support for running the ECC 5.x infrastructure is still being qualified and should appear in the near future.
are you calling my CE a liar ? ...that's awesome ..i am assuming we have to use raw luns ..to be able to present gatekeepers to this vm running ECC 6 ?
that's awesome ..when do you expect we will see official statement about supportability of running ECC 6 infrastructure on a virtual machine. You know ..have to be ready when management asks the question
I believe you are correct that you need to configure gatekeepers in a VM as raw luns. Note, the use of raw luns is not necessary to get your infrastructure running in a VM as the software runs fine out of regular virtual disks.
ECC 5.2 is not qualified and will only be qualified by RPQ process. And they are very very tought on the qualifications of 5.2 in VMWare.
ECC 6.0 has some agents that can be deployed in VMWare-ized hosts (9 I think - I am doing from memory so you are warned). The Store/SYMM/SDM agents and most of the core ones are not. As of yet. They were suppose to be on the July ESM but got pushed to Aug ESM (support matrix).
As for your CE lie-ing to you? no. That is what the CEs are being told at this time. Once Aug comes around and they are then supported then the CEs will get the new truth. The reason they are kept out of the loop since the date for the support matrix is not 100% finalized and dont want to get into issues of "when something will be supported".
Talk to your account team (like the TC) and have them query the ECC SVC team on when ECC will be supported under VMWare. the more people that request it the sooner it will happen.
We have every intent of adding support for the Symm/SDM agent in a VMware Guest in August (it's going through the final checkout right now.)
Bless you! Half of my ECC Agent/Infrastructure boxes have those agents on them.
On a different note, when can we see more agents on Linux? I have 1000 machines in the data center(s) and less than 10% are windows & legacy unix. All the rest are linux. And a good portion of the windows ones are mine (err EMC ECC servers).

The following is supported running on a VMware Guest running Windows under VMware ESX Server 3.0.x:
Master Agent
Host Agent
Fibre Channel Connectivity Agent
Workload Analyzer Archiver
Storage Agent for CLARiiON
Storage Agent for NAS
Storage Agent for SMI
Storage Agent for Centera
Storage Agent for HDS
EMC Invista Agent
VMware Agent
Infrastructure components
¿ ECC Server and Repository
¿ Store(s)
¿ StorageScope Server and Repository
¿ Performance Manager
We also support the Host and Master agent on a guest running Linux.
