17 R5, SupportAssist x64 v3.12.2.40 stuck on Scan Hardware option

Alienware 17 R5

Alienware 17 R5

Dell SupportAssist has automatically pushed out update version 3.12.2.40 to my Alienware 17 R5 laptop.

Ready to update SupportAssistReady to update SupportAssist

But the Scan hardware option is stuck on "A task is currently in progress. Wait for the previous task to finish."

SupportAssist v3.12.2.40 A task is currently in progress. Wait for the previous task to finish.SupportAssist v3.12.2.40 A task is currently in progress. Wait for the previous task to finish.

(1) Support for Alienware 17 R5, Let Dell automatically find driver updates for you, click on [Check for Updates] works.
(2) Run System File Checker (SFC), Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) both say there are no problems.
(3) SupportAssist advanced options Repair and Reset fail to get Scan hardware option to work.
(4) Diagnostic "SupportAssist is testing your PC hardware", fails to run tests.
(5) SupportAssist continues to be stuck on "A task is currently in progress. Wait for the previous task to finish."

As in previous updates, hopefully Dell will automatically update SupportAssist in the background to get it fully working.

Hi crimsom:

When I launched SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 on my Inspiron 5584 today I was offered an update to an even newer SupportAssist v3.12.3.5.  The release notes for SupportAssist v3.12.3 have been posted at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs and the minimum system requirements <here> confirm that this new version requires .NET Core Runtime v6.0.x.  Dave4967 posted today in their thread SupportAssist 3.11.4.29 Hardware Scan Error that their hardware scan ran correctly after the update to v3.12.3.5

I ran manual "Get Driver & Downloads" and "Scan Hardaware" scans from the Home tab of v3.12.3.5 and they ran to completion without any errors, but during the hardware scan I noticed that the status of the scan frequently changed from "scanning" to "optimizing", which I don't recall seeing before.  I've posted some images of this hardware scan in The Escaper's 08-Aug-2022 thread SupportAssist Get Drivers & Downloads Not Working.

Hi @lmacri thank you for keeping in touch.

I manually installed Microsoft .NET Runtime - 6.0.9 (x64) on the 14th September 2022.

SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 has just been installed on my Alienware 17 R5 Laptop. I restarted to save OS change. But SupportAssist History says that full run of all options did not include Hardware Scan -Error-.

Support for Alienware 17 R5 Diagnostics, SupportAssist failed to run.

The SupportAssist fault(s) did not get fixed, again. Dell Technical Support must try harder.

Hi crimsom:

How are you running your full hardware scan? Do you choose the "Run All" button on the Home tab, do you choose the "Run" button in the Scan Hardware panel on the Home tab to manually run this one scan, or do you mean that the scan at Troubleshooting tab | I Want To Troubleshoot my PC | I Want To Scan My Entire PC throws an error?

Hi @lmacri the Alienware 17 R5 Diagnostics Full test is run by SupportAssist, see picture in earlier post with date 10-06-2022 at 10:24 PM.

Seemingly Dell wants SupportAssist to increase its role within many diagnostic features. However, becoming 100% reliant on the Dell SupportAssist application, imposes the strategic imperative that SupportAssist is fully functional all of the time. Unfortunately, it seems that the Dell contractors' incomplete computer code is being Bench tested on Dell users.

I am very unhappy that Dell policy is intentionally annoying users when they just want to use their expensive Dell PC. I just want to use the SupportAssist stable version but cannot install the Old stable version. Seemingly need to use Restore or refuse to install SupportAssist version update.

SupportAssist Hardware Scan Result (Manual) - Error not fixed.

Now waiting for update to SupportAssist Version: 3.12.3.5 and it is unfortunate that the Dell SupportAssist application does not have option to install Old version that works.

Dont be to hopefull that 3.12.3 is going to fix the issue. As you can see in my post, SA is still buggy: https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/Dell-SA-version-3-12-3-messed-up-gt-Dell-techHub/m-p/8288114#M93939

I cant use it on my XPS since Dell TechHub causing bluescreen. So have to sett the service to manual to prevent it from start after boot.

Hi @ThomasAAT as per my message on 10-21-2022 at 06:48 PM, SupportAssist Version 3.12.3.5 did not fix anything, now waiting for next version update. All SupportAssist dependant functions do not work.

For example: (1) SupportAssist unable to complete the Diagnostic Full or Quick Test. (2) Drivers & Downloads SupportAssist detection of driver update not available.

Thankfully the 17 R5 Operating System tolerates this SupportAssist and the other related faults.

We have a similar problem indeed. So I will continue monitoring any further updates on SA and shear my findings with you and the community.

Hi crimsom:

Just an FYI that I launched SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 today and it auto-updated to v3.13.0.236. The v3.13.0 release notes have already been published at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs (thankfully, the minimum system requirements <here> haven't changed and still say Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime 6.0.9 are required). I currently have Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.11 and the auto-update finished successfully, although it took almost 10 minutes for the installer to run to completion on my Inspiron 5584. I ran manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" and "Scan Hardware" scans from the Home tab of SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 and both ran okay.

Here's hoping that hardware scans will run correctly from the Diagnostics tab <here> of your Alienware 17 R5 support page once SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 is installed.

Hi @lmacri thank you for keeping in touch. The SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 update required an interim Restart (not Shut Down) before update would complete on my Alienware 17 R5.

This SupportAssist update does not acknowledge the internal USB failure for AWCC FX tab (or Home tab) to appear, so this PC is still stuck in AlienFX LED dark mode. SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 does not provide all the troubleshooting functions.

This SupportAssist update does reinstate the Diagnostic Full or Quick Test and reinstate detection of driver updates.

Hi crimsom:

Glad to hear that SupportAssist v3.13.0.236 seems to have fixed one bug on your Alienware 17 R5 laptop. I don't have the Alienware Command Center (AWCC) app on my Inspiron 5584 and rarely use any options on the Troubleshooting tab of SupportAssist (my service warranty has expired and I don't use Dell SupportAssist Remediation / System Repair so the only troubleshooters that are of much use to me are at Troubleshooting | I Want to Troubleshoot My PC | I Want to Check a Specific Piece of Hardware) but it sounds like Dell still has a few bugs to fix in SupportAssist v3.13.0.236. Sadly, the Known Issues section <here> in the release notes for SupportAssist v3.13.0 indicates that Dell still hasn't fixed the long-standing bug where driver scans may not work correctly in SupportAssist after Dell Update or Dell Command | Update is installed or updated.

Just an aside, but I tend to wait a few months after a Feature Update like v22H2 goes into wide release before I install it just to make sure it's stable. I have a Win 10 Professional OS so I use the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) to control when Windows Update delivers new Feature Updates at Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update | Windows Update for Business | Select the Target Feature Update Version.

I ran the WhyNotWIn11 utility to confirm that my Inspiron 5584 meets the system requirements for Win 11 but I don't want to upgrade until Win 11 is more stable and more third-party software developers have figured out how to tweak their software to run correctly on this OS (as evidenced by the number of Dell users with Win 11 still having problems running SupportAssist) so I've also blocked my upgrade to Win 11 using this Local Group Policy Editor setting.

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Local Group Policy Editor Target Release Version 28 Aug 2022.png

Win 10 Home and Win 11 Home OSs don't have a Local Group Policy Editor but they can use Gibson Research Corporatons's InControl utility to manage the timing of Windows upgrades and Feature Updates - see the ghacks.net 16-Feb-2022 article at Take Control of Windows Updating and Upgrading with InControl.

This SA update did not solve the emitted freeze on my AW17R3 caused by dell techub. And it won't even update on my xps 15, so I still cant use it on the xps otherwise it will blue screen. Since the switch over to dell techub (from supportassistagent) the problem started on both my systems. SA lives up to its reputation...
