supportassist issue

Are there any known issues with SUpportAssist that would cause apps such as Dell.CoreServices.Client.exe to crash multiple times each  day. I am on the verge of uninstalling it till the next update comes along.

A typical error looks like this:

Dell.CoreServices.Client

A typical day is highlighted above.

I am running Windows 11  Version 24H2.

On an Insprion 15 3511

I have been talking with one of the agents about this for a few weeks.

During week 1 I was advised to re-install Windows.

During week 2, An agent refreshed my bios firmware and reset & repaired SupportAssist.

Yesterday SupportAssist was re-installed early yesterday so the errors you see on the screenshot are for that version. My current SupportAssist version is 4.6.3.32388

Any feedback/ideas are welcome.

My main version of SupportAssist is 4.6.2.21388 . I also have this version on my W10 machine. The install on my problem machine W11 was done by the support agent a few days ago. ...

If i search for runtime:
Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 6.0.30 (x64)
Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 8.0.11 (x64)

So i do not have any "Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime".... So does that mean i do not have what's needed?

Hi Rockface:

No, your image confirms you have the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x required for the latest SupportAssist v4.6.2.

When you install a Desktop edition  of .NET Runtime the program name displayed at Settings | Apps and Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features is always missing the word ".NET" (see my 04-Dec-2024 image <above>). I don't know why they do that for the Desktop editions but I agree it's confusing, and they've been doing it for years.

For example, here's an old image I captured on 16-Jan-2024 when I had the "base" MS .NET Runtime v6.0.x (previously required by one of my old console apps) and MS .NET Desktop Runtime v7.0.x (previously required by one of my old desktop apps).  Only the Desktop edition is missing the word ".NET".

BTW from msinfo32.
BIOS Version/Date        Dell inc 1.33.0, 16/09/24

That is also good news.  It means you have the latest Dell Inspiron 15 3511 System BIOS v1.33.0 (released 12-Nov-2024) currently listed on your Inspiron 15 3511 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-3511-laptop/drivers.

All the information you've posted so far points to some sort of incompatibility between the latest SupportAssist v4.6.2 and your Win 11 v24H2 OS that wasn't caught during beta-testing. If I were you I wouldn't waste any more time on this and just wait to see if the next release of SupportAssist runs correctly on your system.

Hi Rockface:

Which version(s) of the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime are currently installed on your system?  Search for "runtime" at Settings | Apps and/or Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.

Just a thought, but the Dell TechHub service is used by SupportAssist v4.x to run hardware diagnostics.  Do your errors stop if you disable automatic background hardware diagnostic scans as instructions <here> in the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide? **

I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired (I found they were too buggy and consumed too much CPU and RAM), but just note that Dell SupportAssist v4.x typically has two components - the main Dell SupportAssist application application and a small "helper" SupportAssist APPx module that contain files and credentials required to install and run the main application - and each component as a different version number.  See my 16-Sep-2024 post in AnotherJamieRI's "Dell SupportAssist" vs "SupportAssist" vs "Dell Update" vs "Dell Update for Windows Universal" for more information.

If you search for "supportassist" at Settings | Apps what is the version number of your main Dell SupportAssist application (which should match the version number listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features).  I only ask because the "current" SupportAssist v4.0.3 has several known bugs (see employee DELL-Chris M 10-Jun-2024 SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem"), but according to employee DELL-Nat M's 19-Nov-2024 post in jmarsh09's Update Not Working On Support Assist a new version of SupportAssist v4.x will be released soon.  The new Nov 2024 release notes have already been posted at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs and state the upcoming SupportAssist version will require Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x.  I'm just curious if Dell customer support installed the upcoming version of SupportAssist that isn't in wide release yet (and if the new installer automatically installs the correct MS Desktop Runtime v8.0.x).

FYI, the "current" SupportAssist v4.0.3 requires Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v6.0.x, which reached end of support on 12-Nov-2024.

_________________________________________________

** NOTE: When SupportAssist was still installed on my Inspiron 5584 I disabled ALL background tasks and only ran manual update checks and hardware scan from the Home tab.  I found the other "system optimization" scans were too aggressive [for example, see my 12-Jul-2021 comment in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the registry cleaner included with the Tune Performance scan (now called Boost Performance in SupportAssist v4.x)] and had the potential to do more harm than good.

I just updated my support assist and I see the same in RM. It is not shutting down properly when you shutdown/restart your pc.

In event viewer info 0 "theDellClientManagementService service command processed successfully" the time stamp on this is 1 second after event viewer info 1074 which is when I clicked shut down.

In event viewer it shows error 7043 "The Dell Client Management Service service did not shutdown properly after receiving a preshutdown control" The time stamp on this is 17 seconds after I clicked shutdown.

Event 109 under info will show that the Kernel Power manager has initiated a shutdown transition 10 seconds after error 7043.

This has led to my pc taking 17 seconds longer to shutdown, which is that service not shutting down properly and crashing.

For Imacri, I did not have the 8.0 framework on my pc before, and it installed during support assist update.

My version that shows in control panel programs is 4.6.2.21388 and was installed today Dec 4 2024.

So another bug, maybe the next update will fix.

Noticed your screenshot shows many errors on the same day, so far I'm just seeing this on shutdowns/restarts, but I just updated so we will see after I have been using my pc for awhile.

Just for further info I don't have automatic scans or software updates or system performance test on, I also do not allow OS Recovery to install (even though I have the plug in) so it won't create snapshots.

Hi tolduso:

Thanks for that useful (and disappointing) information about the new SupportAssist v4.6.2.

What is your Dell computer model, antivirus, and Windows operating system?  If Win 10 or Win 11, please include the edition (Home or Professional), version, and OS build number of your OS [open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver].

What is your current BIOS version?  To find your BIOS version open a Run dialog box, , enter msinfo32 to view your System Information, and look for the field named "BIOS Date/Version".

The original poster Rockface has a Win 11 v24H2 OS.  This Win 11 version is still a work in progress (see the Known Issues at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2#known-issues) and was pushed out too soon by Microsoft, in my opinion.  Many Win 11 v24H2 users are reporting buggy behaviour with a wide range of third-party (non-Microsoft) software because the executables and/or drivers are not fully compatible with v24H2 yet.  I wonder if there is some additional security feature(s) built in to Win 11 that is causing similar problems with the new SupportAssist v4.6.3?

@tolduso According to File Explorer my version of .NET is v4.0.30319 although in Windows update I have an optional preview for 3.5 and 4.8.1  waiting. There is also a BIOS update to 1.33 which I already have.

The last thing the support agent said was that if this fails (which it has) then I'd need to wait for the next update.

Hi tolduso:

If you haven’t already done so, I’d also advise that you permanently DISABLE your Windows Fast Startup power option as instructed in Brink’s TenForums tutorial Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 (instructions for Win 11 users are <here>) and then restart your system a few times to see if this helps.

The Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) is enabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11 but it can sometimes interfere with the loading and initialization of drivers and services at boot-up and cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and problems with a wide range of programs, including firmware / software updates.

@lmacri

Hi have just read the release note including the pre-requisites. I assume the install checks all of these first ???

I do not have  .NET Desktop Runtime version 8.0.x. or anything. What I have is

I have Microsoft Windows Desktop runtime 6.0.30 and 8.0.11 which i assume is something entirely different. Presumably, i need .NET Runtime 8.0.11.

My main version of SupportAssist is 4.6.2.21388 . I also have this version on my W10 machine. The install on my problem machine W11 was done by the support agent a few days ago.

Thanks for posting a link to the release notes. That does at least give the pre-requisites.

In a few days, I will uninstall SupportAssist and those subcomponents and wait for the new release.

BTW - When the latest version was installed for me. It obviosly did not install the required version of .NET.

Hi Rockface:

Did you check for installed Microsoft .NET Runtimes at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features as I suggested in my 03-Dec-2024 post <above>? The Microsoft Learn article at What is .NET Framework? notes that the .NET Framework (Windows only) and .NET Runtimes (cross-platform apps for running websites, services, and console apps on Windows, Linux, and macOS) are different programs.

From my Win 10 machine, which has Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x ** installed:

** NOTE: The "base" Microsoft .NET Runtime v8.0.x (for console apps) and Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x (for desktop apps like SupportAssist v4.x; includes the"base" .NET Runtime v8.0.x plus additional files) are listed as different products at https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/8.0/runtime.

Hi In your earlier post you say:

Which version(s) of the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime are currently installed on your system?  Search for "runtime" at Settings | Apps and/or Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.

If i type in "NET" I get nothing at all.

If i search for runtime:
In control
Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 6.0.30 (x64)
Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 8.0.11 (x64)

So i do not have any "Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime".

See screenshot.

So does that mean i do not have what's needed?

BTW from msinfo32.

@lmacri

My system is a XPS8930 with Win 10 Home 22H2 Build 19045.5131 Bios is 1.1.30 installed on 3/14/23. Antivirus is McAfee.

A final bios update was released on 12/15/23 for 1.1.31, but my warranty on my system had just expired and there was no way I was going to flash it with Dell's history of bios updates right before Christmas.

But I'm only seeing the errors In RM and event viewer after a system shutdown. The pc taking 17 seconds longer to shutdown is the main thing I don't like, which I don't know if the DellClientManagement service is hanging during shutdown or if it is trying to run a process as soon as I click shutdown.

Fast startup is the first thing I disable when I setup a pc, and its still disabled.

Thinking about just uninstalling since I'm out of warranty anyway, and only used it for hardware checks once a year.
