SMC Virtual Appliance
We are getting our first V-MAX, and it is our first Symmetrix line array for our open
systems environment. Prior to this we've only had DMX for mainframe.
As part of this rollout, we want to implement SMC. Currently we are looking at the SMC
virtual appliance. However, we want to make sure that we can manage both our open
systems V-MAX and our mainframe DMX through the same centralized SMC server.
So, the question is this, can we do "remote" management with the SMC virtual appliance
for our mainframe's DMX4?? The installation guide primarily focuses on "local"
management for the appliance.
Thanks,
Will S.

not sure what you mean by "remote management" ? SMC is a web-based application so you can get to it from anywhere. The appliance will need to be presented 6 gatekeepers from VMAX and assigned as raw devices to the VM (physical compatibility mode)

There are two methods available in setting up SMC on a physical server, local and
remote. In the local method, you run the SYMAPI server on the server running
SMC, and present the gatekeepers directly to that server. In the remote method,
you install SMC on one server, and point it to a separate server with SYMAPI and
connectivity to the gatekeepers.
So, my question is, can I do this same sort of remote setup with the virtual
appliance?
Thanks.

i don't see why you couldn't, i am sure it's running symcli on the appliance so you need to modify it to point to your symapi server. I can't remember if you can get to regular bash shell on this appliance to modify the appropriate files. I know on Solutions Enabler appliance i had to boot into single user mode and change the root password because the default account (seconfig) would not allow me to change any parameters.

Hi,
The idea of having a virtual appliance to make it as a Server (Symapi server if its a SE appliance) and let clients connect to it. I dont know if you have any option in SMC virtual appliance to point it to a remote symapi server?
thanks,
Saurabh
