iDRAC 6 failed logon
I have a Dell PowerEdge R610. I installed the latest BIOS - 6.6.0. I installed an iDRAC 6 card. I updated the card to the latest firmware 2.91 A00. I configured the card via CTRL - E and later via F10 - System Services. Using each utility I configured the IPv4 components and a username and password. I then attempted to access card via Web access and Putty SSH. Both fail logon. I used racadm to perform a soft reset - tried root/calvin - same failed logon message. Do I have a bad card or am I missing a configuration step? Please advise. Milty

I am not able to use Firefox to access the iDRAC - I tried on multiple PC's (various OS's) on multiple versions of Java. I am able to access the iDRAC if I use Java version 7up80 on Chrome only. I must rename the viewer file when it auto downloads to viewer.jnlp to access the Virtual console.
I run the browser within a Windows Hyper V Windows 7 VM due to the insure Java version required.
I appreciate all the inputs from the various moderators.
Thanks,
Milty

Hello
The R610 should come standard with an iDRAC6 express. You should not need to install anything for the web server to function. If the default user/pass of root/calvin is not working then I would reset the iDRAC to defaults.
racadm racreset - restarts the iDRAC
racadm racresetcfg - resets the iDRAC to defaults and restarts
SSH may require additional configuration to enable. When using a browser to access the web server, if you get a pop-up box requesting login credentials just close the box. Make sure you are logging into the web page. The latest documentation is on the 1.95 firmware support page.

After performing a number of Google queries and uninstalling and installing various versions of Java I successfully accessed the iDRAC 6 using Java version 7 rev 8. One caveat: if Java auto downloads a viewer.jnlpipaddretcetc file you'll need to rename it beginning with viewer include all other text symbols or numbers and end in .jnlp. Then double-click renamed file and follow all prompts.
Be aware this version of Java is insecure. You may want to run it inside of a VM or a Sandbox until Dell upgrades firmware for the iDRAC 6 to inter-operate with the latest secure Java version.

IDRAC 6 latest usable JAVA version is 1.72 do not use newer once.
I think R610 should not use license for web access feature. but you can check with "racadm license view" if there is no license set the IDRAC NIC cannot use with Dedicated option.
Please check NIC and system info settings?
racadm getniccfg and racadm getsysinfo
getniccfg shows in the output that you have any link on the port.
And please check the gateway IP with ping and the IDRAC IP too.

Updates. I discovered that the purchased iDRAC was for a T610 I own an R610. We ordered the correct iDRAC and installed it. You noted Java 1.72 - that version does not appear to be available at least not on the Java site. I have located 1.4.2 on Java's site in the archive section. I attempted to install the Java ver. 1.4.2 but it is not compatible with the processor in my Windows 7 OS or Windows 10 OS.
Each time I attempt to access the iDRAC I must first clear my browsers cache – otherwise the iDRAC banner I receive displays an IDRAC 7 controller. Once I clear my browser cache then the correct iDRAC banner is displayed (the physical card is an iDRAC 6 Enterprise) iDRAC 6 controller. I cannot determine where the iDRAC 7 controller banner is pulled from or why. Any thoughts?
I tested a number of Java versions but tried not to step down too far - I'm concerned about the insecure version you suggested - although Java 7 is also insecure I can successfully log in if I specifically running Java 7u80. When I attempt to perform a remote console a Java download is executed - a "viewer.jnlpxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" file is downloaded in the format viewer.jnlpANipaddressAservernameAproductnameUseradminAbunchofnumbersAparanthesis. This file name must be renamed to viewerANipaddressAservernameAproductnameAuseradminAbunchof numbersAparanthesis.jnlp Then double click, then a number of pop ups are clicked and the remote console opens.
I am planning on testing within a Hyper-V VM to contain the insecure version of Java required to work with the iDRAC 6 Enterprise product. More to follow.
Thanks,
Milty

Another option to try on newer java is adding an exception.
I have been able to use the console on 11th generation(iDRAC6) systems by adding the iDRAC to the Java security exception list. In the Java control panel there is a security tab. The URL must be the exact URL used to access the iDRAC, including the port. I have not found a way to make wildcards work. An example address would be:
https://192.168.1.120:443
I think that is the only change I made, and I am able to connect using Java version 8. Also, I suggest not using chrome. I don't think chrome was validated for the iDRAC6. Chrome does not launch the console correctly for me, I use Firefox.
Thanks

I have no idea. I doubt that issue is related to security restrictions limiting iDRAC access. You may have an iDRAC7 on the network with the same IP address. I would try changing the iDRAC6 IP. I would say that it could possibly be a bad firmware flash, but the iDRAC 6 and 7 firmware should not be related in any way. iDRAC 7 and 8 share firmware.

I tested Chrome four times successfully this morning but following this when connecting I am presented with a iDRAC 7 Controller banner. At this point all logon attempts fail. I can only access the iDRAC 6 if I receive an iDRAC 6 Controller banner. I've cleared cache, restarted my PC - tried different PC's - same banner 7 issue.
I tested as you suggested using FireFox with Java 8 installed. I had previously configured Java Security exception list for my iDRAC 6 IP and port. Same as above, although this time I was able to access my iDRAC 6 one time when I received the iDRAC 6 Controller banner. Each successive attempt I receive the iDRAC 7 banner and cannot logon.
Any thoughts on why or where I am pulling the iDRAC 7 banner from?
I am at the latest iDRAC 6 firmware 2.92
Thanks,
Milty

I installed the latest Firefox, installed it on Windows 10 OS, with latest Java 8 installed and an exception was added for the iDRAC URL but when I execute the Virtual Console I receive the download file that I must rename to viewerxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.jnlp. I then execute this file - acknowledge all pop ups - but receive final pop up - Connection failed.
Thanks,
Milty
