R430 Update iDRAC and BIOS Matrix

Happy Friday everyone!

I have a Dell R430 that we are recommissioning into another purpose. It used to run an application that is now a VM. Anyways, I inherited this physical machine. This machine has iDRAC8 on it. I am looking to get it updated. Here are the current versions...

  • BIOS - 2.7.1
  • iDRAC - 2.30.30.30

Right now I only have the iDRAC networked so I can get it updated. I for the life of me cannot find an upgrade path anyplace. Nor can I find some of the older downloads. Research has led me to believe this has to be staged in multiple iterations. Which I'll put the time in to do. I am not using the Dell OpenManage system.

I am hoping someone here has the knowledge of the order of operations to get this system updated. Thanks in advance, and I am open to any questions!

As a note, I just tried to update the iDRAC from 2.30 to 2.60 and it failed. I found it under downloads for the service tag and under "older versions". The oldest one in there was 2.60, does anyone have access to an older version that might be needed first?

Another note, tried to update the BIOS from 2.7.1 to 2.80 and it failed stating it could not verify the signature?

I did find this...

Resolution:

iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 Dell Update Packages (DUP) no longer carry SHA-1 digital signatures. This DUP change was introduced in iDRAC firmware 2.61.60.60 and later. iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 version 2.40.40.40 or later added support to verify the SHA256 signatures. iDRAC must be running one of the following versions to support SHA-256 DUP payloads through Out of Band updates.

So this must mean there is a BIOS version I am missing as well...

I managed to get the iDRAC 2.40 version and am trying that now.

So far, everything is going smooth once I did iDRAC 2.40--->2.50--->and so on. Including the BIOS. But I've got a long way to go. If anything, the iDRAC has slowed down.

This can be marked as solved or closed.

The trick here was getting iDRAC to the 2.40.40.40 version and this will allow you to update your BIOS past the 2.71 version.

I am now at the newest GA version for both iDRAC and the BIOS.
