Recover OEM Activation

Hi,

We recently moved to virtualization, making our main server a VM (P2V). Thing is that Windows Server 2008 got deactivated. Is there any way that we can recover our OEM license and activate Windows? Thanks for your responses!

Hello

No, I'm not aware of a method to recover the Windows license if it has been lost. We do not replace lost licenses, and I don't think we carry Windows 2008 media any longer. If it was an OEM installation then you may be able to do a new physical installation. It should auto-activate if you install the same OS that was purchased with the system.

Thanks

We had a similar issue.

Seems Dell do not factory install the key on the licence sticker but their own generic key. Therefore when you move the machine to a virtual (in our case we did a P2V conversion on the same host so OEM licencing is preserved and this has been confirmed by Microsoft as a valid transition as long as the VM is running on the same physical hardware as originally installed) the key is no longer valid as it is no longer seen as a Dell system. When you try and activate you get a generic error that activation could not complete and no further assistance.

By running an slmgr -dlv we were able to see that the last four digits of the key on the factory install had no relation to the sticker on the case. We installed the key shown on the case sticker and were then able to activate successfully.
