T640 PSU Fan Control

Hi All,

I have a nice new T640 that I use as a file server, but I also have a graphics card (nVidia GTX 1650) in it for occasional terminal use. Given that it's an unrecognized card I'm using ipmitool to quiet down the main fans (had to downgrade iDRAC to 3.30, as I couldn't figure out how to install racadm on Debian Stretch). So far, so good.

The only problem is the PSU fan. Somehow, somewhat randomly, after a while it goes into what sounds like 100% power, and never gets out of it. I can control everything else, but I couldn't find anything about the PSU fan.

Is there any way to control the PSU fan? It's not running at 100% from the beginning, at some point some logic must decide that it's time to turn up the volume, and seems to never revisit that decision. The way it is right now it is just too noisy and pretty usless.

Thanks!

Hi,

We understand you are facing a Fan issue on Debian OS with PowerEdge T640.

It would be great if you could upgrade to the latest IDRAC and with BIOS in tandem and see if the issue persists.

iDRAC upgrade list below further.

VERSION RELEASE DATE IMPORTANCE

4.00.00.00, A00 09 Dec 2019 Recommended
3.36.36.36, A00 16 Sep 2019 Recommended
3.34.34.34, A00 24 Jun 2019 Recommended
3.30.30.30, A00 04 Mar 2019 Recommended

Please be informed that BIOS has to be in tandem applied before for iDRAC updates to have appropriate compatibility.

VERSION RELEASE DATE IMPORTANCE

2.4.8 03 Dec 2019 Urgent
2.4.7 12 Nov 2019 Recommended
2.3.10 16 Sep 2019 Recommended
2.2.11 25 Jun 2019 Recommended
2.2.9 31 May 2019 Recommended
1.6.13 11 Feb 2019 Recommended

And one more thing, from Dell's support point of view it currently does not support Debian for T640.

However, it is of best interest to check if you could upgrade to the latest BIOS and iDRAC and see if the Fan trouble goes away.

Let us know how it goes. Happy to help!

Thanks

Vivek

Hi Vivek,

thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately just updating to the latest iDRAC software is not going to help me, as that's where I started...

Because with that I have the problem that the main system fans are running full power (due to the unrecognized graphics card), and I couldn't find a way to control them, as IPMI fan control doesn't work with iDRAC9 40, and I couldn't find anything in the web interface to turn off the 3rd party full power option (like racadm allows).

So there are a few open avenues/questions.

Assuming updating to iDRAC 9 40 (which I would prefer, I don't like sitting on old versions) fixes the PSU fan issue, I need to fix the main fan issue:

1. How can I install racadm on debian 9? Somehow aptitutde doesn't recognize the repo as valid, it says there is no release file, and I can't use it. Reinstalling the whole system to a different OS is something that I would really like to avoid right now, there are too many configurations and tweaks that are going to be a pain to migrate.

2. If that doesn't work, is there a way to disable the 3rd party full power option in the iDRAC web interface? I didn't see any way to do that, but I'm not familiar with the system at all (this is my first contact with it), so I may just not have seen it.

If neither of those work:

3. Is there any way to control the PSU fan on iDRAC 30 either from the web interface or through IPMI? Again, there was nothing that jumped out to me, but I may just have missed it.

Any help welcome! Thanks!

Quick question: does anybody know how and when the PSU fan turns on? It seems to be totally random... Yesterday I had the system running for several hours until it kicked in, today I didn't even have a chance to log in before it started. And once it starts, it never stops.
