Venue 11 pro i5-4300y Throttling

Hey Dell folks, it seems the 60C throttling is a little too aggressive. Is there any plan to increase this to 70C or better? I get throttled doing simple tasks at times..... a BIOS update to increase this would seem in order. Oh BTW, my 4300y 8/256 seems to be working perfectly. I know others have had issues, but this tablet is fantastic. I ordered a surface pro at the same time, used them side by side and shipped the Surface back.

That's really helpful!  Does that mean XTU will be rest every time you connect it to the keyboard?

When the keyboard case  is connected it begins throttling to 6W again but I think the voltages stick.

Absolutely wonderful! Works great and now Civilization V runs very smoothly on medium. Medium!!! Just so that my struggles amount to something useful, here is 'to do' list for owners of the i3 model:

1. Make the modifications in the instructions stated above using the 'grub' method. No need to use the BAR edit program to get around the throttling.

2.  Follow these instructions posted by iGetThis in order to disable connected standby.

Use Regedit and change the below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
Change the value of the key CsEnabled from 1 to 0 and reboot.

3. Download and install Intel XTU (Extreme Tunight Utility).

4. In XTU under core, increase Turbo Boost Power Max to your desired value. I just went with 12W because that's double the power!

5. Tweak the core, cache and graphics voltages using XTU. Mine are at -80 -42 and -56 respectively but this will vary with every chip. You can find many undervolting guides online if you don't know how to do this but I strongly recommend doing so!

6. Apply your final power and voltage values and save them as a profile (I called mine Test) so they can be reapplied easily if needed.

7. Make sure you're fully charged and plugged in OR on battery (without the battery keyboard case).

8. Tell your computer to sleep (not shut down) and then wake it up. Use Furmark or some other stress test to verify the results are stable and show an improvement.

Now all I need is some kind of workaround to get it to work with the travel case and everything will be perfect!

That's helpful to know.  I wonder if there's a setting we're missing, as the keyboard dock shouldn't affect wattage...   The voltages definitely stick with keyboard (fortunately).

Another issue is that it since disabling connected standby the tablet takes a lot longer to wake up from sleep. I have found that sometimes it wakes up instantly but others it takes a good 10 seconds. What's even more worrying is that sometimes it won't wake up at all unless I hold down the power button until it vibrates.

I'm following this guide, but when I place the bootx64.efi file on my thumb drive inside the efi\boot folder it won't boot in to grub. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to pick a certain file format or make the thumb drive bootable somehow?

Did you watch my step by step video? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RaLHKJ8Ehr4 should explain everything

the size doesn't matter.  I did mine with a 64gb stick.  it does need to be bootable though.  I used a windows 8 reinstall thumb drive, backed up the original boot.efi and moved the one from this thread in its place.

Did you check the boot order? You need to make sure that USB is first.

I did watch the video - I placed the file on a thumb drive, I have secure boot disabled but all it does is flash a black screen a couple times then load in to windows, I never get the grub prompt. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a 4gb or less thumb drive so it can be read by older file systems or something? Ive tried with an 8gb USB2 and a 16gb USB3 drive

I got that part finally, and its already way snappier! I'm trying to remove the long limit (since im still stuck at 6w SDP it seems?) in BarEdit but the settings aren't sticking, any guidance?

Make sure connected standby is disabled in the registry, apply your adjustments to the TDP/PL1 in ThrottleStop or Intel XTU and then put the tablet to sleep and wake it back up.  For some people it will only take effect while on battery power or plugged in at 100% charge, but for me, the only time it doesn't work is if I have the battery keyboard attached.  Any time the charging status changes, it will kick the limit back down to 6W.  If you already have XTU running with your changes, all you have to do is sleep cycle again and they will reapply.  Hope that helps.

That is because you disabled connected standby, depending how long the system is in sleep mode it goes into hibernate and it takes longer to wake up (when you need to hold and press power longer)..

In my opinion the system is still junk. I just can't get over it how they set it up.

Did the changes and it worked great on 2 systems. on the 3rd I updated to BiOS 14 and I was WTH??
Made changes and system was stuck @ 0.26 GHz. reverted back and now it comes.
power plan as usual is set to high performance.
Plugged in the system is always stuck @ 0.26 GHz. Unplug and it goes up to full GHz range.
Never checked into it before if a change when plugged in or not.
Plug in and CPU is always max 0.26 GHz, as soon as unplugged CPU right away goes up to 1.2 to 1.6 GHz without issues.

Does anyone have any idea why?

I have core i3 version and newest bios, and I have doubts about this. After disabling connected standby I have to hold down power buton for about 6-7 seconds to wake up but when I touch Win buton system wakes up instantly. Next problem is that I have to touch display after this because backlight is off (or touch the Win buton a second time). I think that there is bug in bios, and even I would like to disable connected standby, issue with waking up the device prevents me from doing this.
