Can you guys please check for updates on your systems?   The update should be available as of yesterday - unfortunately, my system here does not have the secure boot watermark, so I can't verify that it is indeed fixed.    Please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi NickC42,

If you are able to boot to windows 8 RT and are facing issues with the operating system you can refresh the PC first and check if the issues are fixed. You can follow the instructions below  :

Refresh your tablet

Refreshing your tablet will restore the system to original factory settings without deleting any of your personal files, installed apps from Windows Store or personalization settings.

  1. Swipe from the right edge of the display to access Charms.
  2. Touch Settings → Change PC settings→ General→ Refresh your PC without affecting your files.
  3. Touch Get started.
  4. Touch Next after you read the warning.

NOTE: Third-party apps will be removed.

If Refreshing the PC does not fix the issues you also can try resetting the PC which will re install the OS on your computer.

Reset your tablet

Resetting your tablet will return the system to original factory settings.

  1. Swipe from the right edge of the display to access Charms.
  2. Touch Settings → Change PC settings→ General→ Reset your PC and start over.
  3. Touch Get started.
  4. Touch Next after you read the warning.

CAUTION: Resetting your tablet erases all data from your tablet, including your account configuration, music, pictures, files, and so on. Ensure that you back up all the required data before you proceed.

If your tablet will not boot into Windows 8 RT, you may need to perform recovery procedures.

Recover your tablet

  1. Turn off your tablet.
  2. Press and hold the Volume-up button and then press the Power and Sleep/Wake button to turn on the tablet.
  3. Release the Volume-up button when "Attempting to boot from Windows Recovery..." is displayed on the upper left corner of the display.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to refresh or reset your tablet.

Hope This helps.

Hi Saurabh

No none of this works.

The device boots fine and works OK, except that I can't Reset or Refresh it so that I can document the start-up and make it available for someone else to use.

I tried the Recovery boot option which took me to the advanced tools, but still no joy. It asks me for the Installation or Recovery Media.

I have the same table as you, and my XPS 10 is doing the same thing.

Refresh and reset shouldn't ask for media or files unless something is amiss.   I'd recommend you call support to get the device swapped out.   Apologies for the trouble.

As this has been reported by more than one user, could it be a problem created by the latest firmware update, and hence only fixable by another update? In other words will the replacement device suffer the same problem? Has Dell tested this?

Never say never, but I strongly doubt it.    If the update was causing this failure, there would be way more than a handful of reports.   We did a ton of testing as well on the updates.   My suspicion is that your image wasn't loaded 100% correct from the factory.

I have the same problem. I called CS today. The technical support guy said the only way to fix this problem is to send the tablet for service.

Ok I was able to reset it today. When I checked with "reagentc.exe /info", the path for recovery image was missing so I fixed the problem with this command "reagentc.exe /setosimage /path F: /target C:Windows /Index 1", where F is the drive letter to recoveryimage.wim (3.4GB) file is stored. You can use diskpart from command prompt with administrator privileges to assign it. Once you are done, try one of the methods explained above and it will reset/refresh.

Saurabh,

In the refresh instructions, step 2, I don't have an option named General. I'm here because of other Dell recommendations to try refresh to fix the problem with the watermark on the desktop, Windows RT 8.1, SecureBoot isn't  configured correctly, Build 9600. Just began seeing that watermark yesterday after installing the 8.1 update on my XPS 10.

I think step 2 for 8.1 needs to be "Touch Settings - Change PC Settings - Update and Recovery - Refresh your PC without affecting your files.

I'm doing it now, will report if it fixes or doesn't fix the SecureBoot issue.

Thanks,

Jim

Refresh finished, but it did NOT fix the SecureBoot message. Since it appears all else is working okay, I think I'll just do nothing for now. If you come up with a fix, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jim

Microsoft changed those options in Windows 8.1, so the instructions we wrote for 8.0 won't match.    For 8.1, you'll have to go to Settings, Change PC Settings, Update and Recovery, Recovery, Refresh or Remove...

As for the bitlocker message, I'm not sure.   I'll try to update one of mine to 8.1 once I finish testing the charging issues for another thread.

You may want to take a look at this update from MSFT - looks like they had some sort of a problem with the RT update.
