I never have worked with the Unity but it was part of a rescent Dell Traning 6 weeks ago because it contains legacy stuff as well.

• The DAEs are daisy changed and not in a loop like for the Compellent
• Each DPE have 2 SAS Ports and you connect the first DAE on the 2nd. SAS Port of the DPE. The next DAE than connects to the 1st. SAS Port of the DPE.

The reason for that it that the internal backplane and first SAS port are connected or shared at least.
