Availability/Uptime status

Hi again,

We have a set up that utilises both NMS and vFoglight (vfog monitors the virtual environment and NMS for the network devices and physical machines).  How do I go about creating a simple server availability report that will show percentage up or downtime of a list of servers?

Thanks

Davie

VMs have an availibilty metric for them, percentUptime or Uptime Seconds (which comes from VMware).  If you drag out "Virtual Machines" you could create a table with Name and uptimePercent (choose period average) and that will give you a list of servers and the uptime percentage over the time range you choose.  The uptime in seconds is the uptime since the last power off from VMware, so it would not give you exactly what you want, but I do like to have both on a screen to show.

Hi Juan Carlos,

Unfortunately, I do not have a “final” reply on this one as yet.

As with many things related to the toolset (which I’d consider pretty standard and which are out of the box with previous products I’ve used in this market), it does not appear to be readily available and indeed can only be scoped if you pay for additional professional services. Last reply from support I had was back in June with the following:

We have logged your request for a product enhancement. Your product enhancement ID is VFOG-2178.

Having said that, you can use the legacy cartridge -> netmonitor and add systems into that which report into vFoglight… I think ☺

Good luck!

Uptime is an interesting issue, which I have been looking at for some time.  Usually it's Availability which is the desired metric, with uptime as only one component.

Availability is really most meaningful when measured at the application instance level, from an end-user perspective. From an admin perspective, predictive failure and lifecycle efforts usually revolve around availability of physical servers, network and SAN components.

Physical server availability in turn comprises both "operating" and "accessible" components (e.g. being up and running, but not talking to the network, doesn't do anyone much good.)  Uptime would measure operating, but not necessarily accessible.

Unfortunately, vFoglight does not currently collect uptimeSeconds/Percent for ESX Hosts, just VMs.  Issues with Virtual Center make Availability calculations less than straightforward as well, since an ESX host can be disconnected from VC and still be available.

That being said, I think it possible to do, and believe it will be available in the near future.
