Where are the howto's on how to create custom portlets?

After watching a webinar on quickview- I saw this screener- The top VM CPU consumers w/ history chart would be great (we often have VM's that peg 100% & lock) & this would be a great tool to monitor that & how long its been occuring.
When I try to make a custom view like this- it just doesnt seem like the options are there. Especially the bar charts. Even just a current top current 10 CPU consumers would be nice. Am I the only one wanting to do this? Why is this not a canned portlet? These portlets are supposed to be easy to create but I'm finding they are difficult & time consuming to create.

Select Create dashboard (or report. Open up the data tree and find an ESX server for which you want to get the top consumers and drag it onto you dashboard. You will get prompted for what to select, choose View and you will get the wizard shown. Pick the option highlighted.

If you want to create one where you can select a different ESX host from a list and have the same dashboard (or rpeort) display the data. Drag the esx host to parameterized inputs (in the data view) first then drag from their onto the dashboard (or report) canvas and from their proceed as before. then you can use the page inputs option to change which host you are getting the data for.

I would start with our free online training this should help, then if you still need assistance you can contact your sales rep to engage PSO, as they can create almost anything you want.

Actually, I gave up. 2 to my parts to my reasoning to do so-
1- Support isnt going to do what they are supposed to do in supporting vfoglight functionality. When I read Vizioncore's flyer for this week - "3 Reason to love Vizioncore support"

Did they answer every question? No
Did they help with my challenges? No
Did a forum support guru step in & give specific links to my help with my issue or give advice/suggestions? No.
When you check the 'Introduction to Vizioncore Support'
http://www.vizioncore.com/support/documents/Vizioncore_SupportGuide1_SFS.pdf
Did they provide world-class enterprise level support? No
Did Vizioncore build a trusted relationship ensuring my success? No
Did Vizioncore represent a “Customer Advocate.”? No, in fact it was the opposite. Strict advocate of a policy.
Did Visioncore strive to help me maximize my investment in Vizioncore solutions? No- they gave a blanket 'not supported' answer for both phone support & Forum.
Secondly, come on! :) It should not be this hard & this time consuming just to make an portlet to give me the top ten CPU users. It should not be this hard and time consuming just to delete the dashboard & try more. This all should be an easy process (as advertised) but it absolutely is not an easy process.
So thank you for the suggestion to try. www.foglight.org but I give up! I've got a VMware invironment to manage and I can't be wasting hours trying to get a management app to do what it is supposed to be doing.

Clint,
Thanks for taking the time with me yesterday to review your questions. As mentioned we will have support followup on your alternate post here:
vcommunity.vizioncore.com/.../727.aspx
It maybe these 2 are related as to how to on correctly pulling data.
