A Virus has taken over computer startup

Norton detects no viruses, but there definitely is something that affects the startup.  It changes my default page, slows down the computer and printer, causes freeze ups and general instability.   Below is my initial HijackThis Scan.  I would appreciate any help!! Thanks!

Before we do anything can you do a couple things first?  Go to this sight http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm and do an online scan and delete whatever it finds. Be sure to highlight the drives you want to have searched.

After that could you please go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html and download AdAwareSE and delete what it finds. Then while using AdAware, click on add-ons and get their plug-in for the VX2 variant, and run that and delete what it finds.

After that go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html and download SpyBot and run that and delete what it finds.

Now go to  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html and download HiJackThis to its own folder that you create on your C:/ drive.  After it is downloaded open the program and click on the Scan button.  When that is done, click on Save to log.  Post the log that it generates right here so that it maybe viewed and analyzed for problems.    Thanks s.

After a total of 6 hours on the phone with Dell and 3 hours on the phone with microsoft (i gave up and hung up with them) I've discovered via a google search on my error message that I have been hijacked...I already have spybot but did not download a hijacker blocker (knew nothing about it).  Any path starting with res:/ is a sign of spyware or a hijacker.  I now know I have a have a hijacker b/c my home page on the internet will not stay to what I've changed it to...but anyway...My problem now is that I cannot download the programs I need to get rid of this junk b/c I do not have administrator rights to my own friggin computer.  It will not let me get in and change it?!  What the heck?!  Any ideas of a way around this part so I can solve my real issue?  Any help, suggestions or ideas would be great!  Thanks so much!   A.T.

If MSN is your internet provider then don't check that last 2(014) entries I have above.

With everything closed except HiJackThis hit the fix button.

Reboot and post a new log.

There is more work but this will get you going.

Thanks s.,

I did all of the scans that you requested.  The trendmicro scan revealed a malware called BKDR_PADODOR.H and two viruses TROJ PADODOR.B in the C:System Volume...and TROJ_STARTPG.AK in C:System32/iecust.... I deleted all of these, but when I started up my computer again, the homepage was hijacked, nothing had changed.

Adaware SE found no treats and 42 negligible objects of no threat.

Spybot showed an error during check Z-Demon (Ungültiger Datentyp für”) and 5 DSO Exploit entries which I have attempted to fix several times but they always show up on the next scan.

I downloaded HijackThis and my next post will show that scan result.  Thanks, B

Besides running the scans listed in my earlier posting from today, I ran HijackThis & removed the items suggested by Wolfie (except the last two O14 items.)  When I rebooted, my computer, nothing had changed.  When the wrong startup page was loading I saw the following at the bottom of the page C:\Windows\System 32\shdock.dll\dnserror.htm.  Here is the newest scan result after removing those items. Thanks, B

BMMREM,

Let's what we can do...

First, let's download the Symantec tool from this page, and follow the instructions provided:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.agent.b.removal.tool.html

-

Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode"

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inetcpl] inetcpl.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSTask] C:\WINDOWS\System32\run_dll.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [taskopen.exe] taskopen.exe
O4 - Global Startup: officejet 6100.lnk = ?

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

-

Reboot your computer normally.

Post back a new log.

Mike.

Thanks Mike,
It may take me a day or two before I have time to download the removal tool, etc.  I appreciate your help and will post back soon.

Thanks everyone for all the help.  I scanned with the Backdoor.Agent.B removal tool twice and it told me I didn't have that virus.  I then went into Safeboot and ran HijackThis and removed the four items that Mike suggested.  After rebooting in Normal mode, I finally got my default startup webpage back.  Everything seems to be working correctly just a little slow.  Symantec suggests the following:
  • Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical, such as an FTP server, telnet, and a Web server. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, blended threats have less avenues of attack and you have fewer services to maintain through patch updates.  Can anyone tell me how to do this?
  • Below is the latest HijackThis log.

    BMMREM,

That can be quite a challenge, I haven't even braved it there yet .. :)

Check this website out by a person who figured all those services out. This can be quite intimidating so remember to take your time and ask others about what your going to remove or disable to see if they've had any problems doing so, then do it one at a time and make sure there aren't any problems before moving on to the next service.

    BMMREM,

Is your entire system performance slow, or just the internet? If just the internet, are you using a dialup or broadband connection?

    BMMREM,

Try fixing this entry in HiJackThis:

    Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

or preferrably going to your startup folder and removing that item; you can get to it by "All programs | Startup".

    Mike.

We have a cable connection to our computer.  Somehow, one of the startup items is Kodak Software updater agent.  That runs all day unless I end the task in the task manager.  I haven't figured out why it runs or how to reset it.  Once I end it, the system runs fine.

    Mike,
I went into Programs and Startup and deleted it.  That should take care of it.  Thanks.

    BMMREM,

Good work - glad to hear it!

Ok, now let's do some cleanup...

    1.  Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.
    2.  Run AdAware SE and Spybot and let them remove any residual 'pieces' of the infection, that HiJackThis couldn't fix.
    3.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot inbetween. Then immediately create a new restore point manuually,

    Good luck,
