Adware removal...

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 7537 with Windows 8.  I'm plagued with adware (Highlightly) that pops up unrelated ads when I mouse over blue links.  I've tried disabling Add Ons in Internet Explorer 10 in the tools menu, removing "Highlightly" from the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and downloaded Adwcleaner and ran a scan.  Nada.  Please help.  I've been browsing and working on this for a long time and can't find an answer.  Thanks in advance.

Hi:

Detailed instructions to remove this malware are detailed here:
http://malwaretips.com/blogs/highlightly-virus-removal/

They stress the importance of following the instructions exactly.

Just out of interest, what security (AV, firewall, other) are you running? If you had Security such as McAfee pre-installed, did you register/activate it?

I bought the computer at Best Buy and Webroot Secure Anywhere came with the computer in disk form.  I did a little research on Webroot and it seemed the better program for my operating system so I installed it and uninstalled McAfee.

Thanks so much for the link.  I will follow it to the letter and then let you know how I made out.

OK, thanks for the info.

WSA comes well-recommended. You might want to ensure that McAfee was completely uninstalled by running their removal tool (MCPR.exe), if you haven't already:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

If the removal link instructions I gave don't do the job, there are further options to try. One-on-one malware removal is no longer offered here, but free advice is available elsewhere at such forums dedicated to malware removal, staffed by experts.

Good luck!

Hi,

If AdwCleaner did not remove your problem, I would suggest that, rather than "throwing a toolbox of scanners" (often making things worse) at your new computer, you get help from experts trained in malware removal. They know which tools target specific adware. They will also confirm that the problem is gone by having you submit follow-up logs. I recommend posting the required DDS logs on the Malware Removal Forum at SpywareHammer and have the staff trained in malware removal walk you through the diagnostic logs and a cleanup. They do not use remote access but will advise you step-by-step on what you can do. Please do not attempt to run any additional scans, install software, or use any other tools until an analyst can advise you on the next step. Please use the same username there as you have here. Help is free. There are no advertisements or trackers on the site as some of the other security forums have, but you will need to register at SpywareHammer and follow the posting instructions. The instructions will inform you of where to download DDS and how to run a scan to post the output information. Don't forget to check your email and click on the link they send you in order to confirm your registration.

BugBatter's suggestion to post at SpywareHammer would have been my next suggestion.

I don't think that any of the scanners recommended in my original link (MBAM, AdwCleaner, and HitmanPro) carry any risk when run according to the instructions given, and am still interested if the link I gave you solved your problems. I recently removed an adware pest similar to yours using these scanners, without resorting to a malware removal forum, hence my original advice.

However I am not certified in malware removal.
