Automatic Updates will not work.

Hello, I've had a recent run-in with a virus and am having a lot of trouble with repairing the damages. The first thing the virus did was disable my Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates, and then install a "Virus Remover 2008" program (I think that's what it was called). Every time I deleted this program, it reinstalled itself a couple of minutes later. My actual virus scanner -- AVG -- also flooded me with notices of infections. The first thing I did was quickly uninstaller Virus Remover2008 and then try to reboot my computer, but after a moment of starting up I was met with a Blue Screen of Death. I remedied this by performing a System Restore through Safe Mode.

But it was not without damage; while Windows Firewall was fixed easily by reenabling it in the Windows Security Centre, Automatic Updates isn't working as easily. Despite the Automatic Updates window from the Control Panel saying that it is on, the Security Centre informs me that it is off. I figured out that the Security Centre was telling the truth after I tried and failed to get an update. Looking at some FAQs and some threads here -- including this one here that I made to get some help -- I believed that the Automatic Updates service had lost its dependencies, as trying to reenable the service from there gave me this error:

"Coud not start the Automatic Update service on Local Computer.

"Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

I have run numerous scans using both AVG, which still picks up random attacks on occasion, and AdAware, which constantly picks up Registry infections now with each scan no matter how many times it "fixes" them.

So following the advice of those who posted in the thread I made, I have come here seeking assistance. Below is the log that HiJackThis gave me. Please help me as soon as possible.

EDIT: And here's something else that just happened: whenever I click the "Analyze This" button in HiJackThis -- I even made sure that no other windows were open -- it crashed instead of opening a new internet window. Am I doing something wrong, or is HiJackThis just being stupid?

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a list HERE.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Ah, thank you for getting back to me so promptly.

- There was another topic posted here; this was while I thought it was simply a problem with Automatic Updates itself.

- System Restore was never disabled. In fact, I had to use System Restore so that my computer would actually boot after the virus attack. Automatic Updates decided to be stupid after the next time I rebooted my computer, however, so the problem still persists.

- I have no cracked software. I never have, actually. I did have a torrent program, however; as a matter of fact, this problem started shortly after I downloaded a torrent. Both that torrent and my torrenting program have been removed and uninstalled. Odd-looking programs that remains are likely ones that I have used without incident.

- This computer belongs to me alone.

- Unless HiJackThis fixes entries automatically after a scan, I did not fix anything; I only posted the log.

Also, I aplogize for not replying right away. There are three reasons for that:

1) I was archiving/compressing important files and putting them onto a removable USB drive in case I should have to remove some files.
2) I was running some quick virus/spyware scans to get rid of any tricky trojans or malwares that tried to sneak in.
3) I had a visitor and thought it would be better to wait until he left so we would have less interruptions.

I believe I have everything ready on my end, so I'm ready to begin whenever you are.

Once we get started, please do not run any extra scans unless advised.

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
  • 1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
  • Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

DDS decided to do the scan as soon as the small DOS box opened, but I still got the results.

I can see the infections and vulnerabilities in there, but I will need you to remove DNA before we begin.

Following that, please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log. Then we'll be ready to continue. Thanks.

I don't even know where I got DNA to be honest, but it was on my Control Panel so I didn't mess with it before. It's gone now, though.

Also, the site was noticably slow with sending me the reply notification... I just got it now. Heavy volume or something?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
  • manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
  • It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
  • Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report along with a fresh HijackThis log into your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

Well, this would certainly explain why my computer has been running slow lately; Malwarebytes found 60 errors.

And I believe it may have worked; already my computer is running faster than before, and HiJackThis' "Analyze This" function suddenly started working.

Perhaps I should try to reenable Automatic Updates now, or is there still more fixing/cleaning to do?

You had quite a bit of malware in there. There may be some more lurking. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

" * Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

* Additional information on A/V control HERE

The system was made to reboot after ComboFix did its scan; I had to hastily close programs that opened at startup.

But I digress, it appears to have done the job; Automatic Updates automatically turned on upon startup (I noticed this while turning my firewall and virus protection back on after I recieved the log). I've yet to see if it actually works, but I'll test it after we're done here.

So, is there anything else you'd like me to do?

Please launch HijackThis and plsace a checkmark next to the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.

Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray.

Otherwise, they may interfere with running ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the following text between the lines below.

Do not copy the dotted lines.

** Make sure you copy/paste ALL the text at once. Do not try to edit extra spaces.

It will copy correctly to Notepad if you highlight and copy as is.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Folder::
c:\windows\swrdnvjf
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\h2i
c:\temp\sTMP3
C:\Temp
c:\windows\rnxxnxcl

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Save this as CFScript.txt

Photobucket

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

You will be prompted to run Combofix again.

Follow the same instructions you did before for running ComboFix.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix while it is running. It may cause it to stall.

When finished, a log is produced here: C:\ComboFix.txt

In your next reply, please post that log along with a new HijackThis log.

Download -- to your Desktop -- JavaRa.Zip from either of these two sites:
http://prm753.bchea.org/click/click.php?id=9
http://www.majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

  • Unzip the download. This will create a new Folder, JavaRa on your Desktop.
  • Double click this new Folder to open it, and double click the file within: JavaRa to execute the program.
  • Click the button: Remove Older Versions.
  • Agree to the cleanup operation by clicking Yes. After a moment, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK. Close the Notepad view that opens.
  • Click the button: Other Tasks.
  • Choose these options:
  • Remove Useless JRE Files
    Remove Startup Entry
    Remove JavaRa Logfile
  • Click Go. When it finishes, click OK to close the panel, and then Exit the program.
  • Delete the download, and the unzipped folder and all contents.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Select Windows Offline Installation > SAVE it to your desktop, do not RUN it yet.
  • When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update. Be patient: It may take five (5) minutes or more for the installation to complete.
  • If the installation gives you the option to install a toolbar UNCHECK the option if you don't want it .
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.
  • Let me know how things are running after that.  If all is well, we'll remove ComboFix, flush System Restore, and you'll be in good shape.

My computer seems to be running perfectly fine now; I tested Automatic Updates (but didn't actually download anything) and it is fixed.

All I need to know now is how to remove ComboFix (is there anything special I need to do, or can I just send it to the Recycle Bin?) and how to flush System Restore (what do you mean by "flush?").
