AVG 7.5 Freeware

Two weeks ago i downloaded the free version of AVG 7.5 and successfully installed it in my laptop. However there was so many changes that happened in my system that one time when i started opening my laptop, the AVG 7.5 showed the message error like " the AVg cannot be initialized because the kernel is missing". I tried to removed the software from the add/remove programs but the system was syaing that it cannot be deleted because it cannot be found in C. What should i do to eliminate the avg software in my system?

If the software cannot be removed by Add/Remove programs then delete the Grisoft Folder at C/Program Files/Grisoft. Reboot your computer. It is not healthy to be on the internet without antivirus protection.

Thanks for the reply however, i tried deleting the files in Program Files but the system cannot delete it and there is a prompt message that there is an error because the file cannot be seen in C. I really dont know what should i do. I am planning to install norton antivirus 2007 but my concern is to just remove the existing anti virus in my system. I have suspended the initiation of the Avg antivirus whenever i start my computer because it does not initialize because of the error in kernel.

Sometimes, if an installation (or uninstaller) has become corrupt, you can fix things by RE-installing the program, and then, trying to remove it.    No guarantee this will work... but given your current situation, I don't know that it will make matters any worse for you.

Thanks again for the reply. I tried re-installing the software since i still have a back up and it successfully installed however still it did not supplied the missing link to work the software properly and the error still occured. Before this problem caused me a problem since my laptop usually is hanging because the task manager keeps on looking for it. However when i deactivated it in the task bar and menu properties in the notification area, the system already works properly. My only concern is to eliminate the software. Probably the only solution that may solve this problem is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall all the components but that will be the last thing that i will do.

Probably a corrupted key and i doubt norton will be any more sufficent. I suggest using the windows live safety full service scan along with ccleaner and registry mechannic. There are certain issues using all three of them properly so if you would like do pm or message me when possible.

I would avoid using any registry editors, including Live OneCare's CleanupScan.

What is the exact text of the message you get when you try to uninstall AVG?

From lookups it might be a virus defelecting it or what i said before. In most cases ive fixed running registry cleanups was the best way instead of doing a format. I can help walk him through the process if he would be willing. Also this might help as well. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml Message Edited by Gmanson on 03-05-2007 08:15 PM

Gmanson, before you walk anyone through the process, it might be good if you continue with your training at Malware Removal University. We usually like those who have completed training to walk people through fixes -- especially if they involve registry cleaning.

We're always glad to have extra help, but the problem is that unless you have gone through training for instructing users on some procedures, the members have no way of knowing that the advice you are giving them is reliable -- and we cannot verify your credentials. If you were sick would you take medication suggested by somebody online who tells you he is a doctor, or would you want to check into his experience and education before following his advice? That's why only licensed medical doctors can prescribe.

People do get busy, but the fact that you dropped out of training, does not help the situation.

I'm sure you can understand why we would want DCF members to be cautious when they are instructed to do registry cleaning.

Was your exact message:   "Could not initialize AVG Anti-Virus kernel interface. Application cannot run" ?

If so, there have been other reports of this at the AVG forum.   It seems there may be an incompatibility between early releases of AVG, and Windows VISTA (are you running VISTA?), and that Windows Defender might be a contributing factor involved under this configuration.

When you said you had a backup copy of AVG that you used to reinstall it, do you know/recall what BUILD of AVG it installed?   One report claims that this problem has been fixed with build 441 (i.e., AVG 7.5.441).  And I believe build 446 is currently available.   Perhaps if you were to download and install a newer build, you'll find that the problem has been resolved.

if you literally mean AVG 7. 1 (rather than 7 .5 ), you're talking about a very old version.

if you install/upgrade to 7.5 , you can't uninstall from ADD/REMOVE programs ? --- if not, what are the exact messages you're getting?

also, you can try the following:   BEFORE you try to uninstall, close-down the AVG-Control Center, and use the windows TASK MANAGER to terminate any AVG-related programs, like avgEMC, avgINET, and avgAMSVR that are still running (there should be two or three of them).   And then, try to UNINSTALL AVG.

i have also installed avg 7.1. I have tried re-installing the new versions and then trying to delete the program..it will not . i have even gone into my files and deleted each file individually. what it keeps telling me is that it cannot be deleted cause it maybe being used by another program. I cannot install any other anti virus program because it tells me that it is not compatible with avg and won't install the new anti virus program. I need help somehow removing it

when you try to install 7.5 over the existing 7.1, did you select " Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen ?   if not, try that....

these are the update instructions, per AVG:

  1. Download new AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5
  2. Run the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 Setup program
  3. Click "Next >" on the AVG "Welcome!" screen
  4. Click "Accept" on the "License Agreement on Use of an AVG Free Edition" screen
  5. Select "Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen and click "Next >"
  6. Select "Restart the computer now" (pre-selected by the program automatically) and click "OK" on the "Installation Complete!" screen to restart your computer and complete the installation

i edited my previous message to include the entire text, per AVG.    that's about all I can say on this.

unless someone here has another suggestion, you can try (joining and) posting your question on the AVG FREE forum [or SEARCH that forum to see if someone else has already posted your problem]:
