I have no idea. Perhaps it has something to do with the maintenance being done on the forums and things are not working correctly temporarily. Perhaps the problem will be fixed soon.

The glitch/bug has been reported to the Dell Liaisons. If there is something that you need help with right away, I have been referring people to SpywareHammer until Dell has the boards working well again. There is a forum at SpywareHammer for General Computer Issues as well as for malware problems.

Woodbear99,

Whatever is causing your issues I'm certain it's not Vista. I've been using it since I got my new system at the end of last year and have never had a problem accessing any of the conferences on DCF. Speaking as someone who has supported every consumer-targeted version of Windows since 95 OSR2, Vista is the most user friendly version IMO. It does have a few annoyances that are enabled by default but once those are turned off it's good to go. smile rvmp

Hi Woodbear99,

My name is Gina and I'm the Sr. Admin for Dell Community. I do not show any bans or restrictions on your user name. Can you post the link that you're trying to access so I can check it?

Thanks,

Now stop that, guys! We're supposed to be teaching safe surfing and prevention on these security forums!

Woodbear99, you will probably want to ask those questions on the Vista Board. However, I can give you a general answer to your security question.
That inconvenience is the operating system protecting you from anything or anyone (a remote access trojan, or another type of hacker) who might do damage by installing malware files in locations where they shouldn't be.
We do not see as much deeply hidden malware on Vista, and that which we do see is easier to remove (in most cases) because of these controls.

Thanks Gina...but when I tried to post a message on Vista software forum just now, I did NOT get the 'banned' message ... so apparently my post spooked someone or something.

But while I have your ear why do I get the occasional message 'You need permission to perform that action'?  This occurs whether or not I have UAC enabled and, for example, most recently when I was just trying to uninstall an application.  How do I get permission, from whom, and why do I need it?  It is these nagging messages that make me want to flee back to WinXP.  Why is it a security matter WHERE I store a file (i.e. which folder) rather than where Vista decides I should store it?  These things baffle me.

Of course getting on the Vista software forum/board is where I originally encountered the 'Banned' message in the first place.

I understand what you are saying about folder location but I still don't see the logic as to why a Program Files folder is more or less secure than a Documents folder which is where Vista asked If I wanted to store a file that it would not let me put in a Program Files folder.  If there were some attempt to delineate the reasoning behind some of these  'peremptory' messages from Vista maybe I could live with some of the restrictions...otherwise they just seem asinine and make me 'anti-vista'.

Think about it...if you were a virus writer, would you disguise your malware as a program that might look legitimate with an .exe that runs out of Programs, or would you try to install it in Documents where a user often browses and is more familiar with what is in there?

You have a point.  But as I said once before if this sort of rationale was made clear by Vista in the first place I could be more accepting of the imperious-sounding restrictions with no obvious explanations...And I still don't know who I get permission from, or why, when I get the message: 'You need permission to do that' ... I am the only owner/administrator of my home computer, am NOT in a network and am made to feel like somebody else owns my computer.  Why is Vista protecting me from myself? That just irks me.  Excuse the rant but that's how I feel. I don't know why I should need permission to erase a disk, for example.
