Big problem on new computer:

Hi,   I bought the Dimension B110 in December and have only used it for internet access.  I have a problem that began on Sunday.  When turning on the computer, the system logs on then goes to a blank screen with the normal wall paper.  No desk top icons appear and the hour glass just sits there without the desk top icons ever appearing, the start button or the bottom bar never show up either.  I was able to access the 'task manager' via ctrl-alt-delete and I tried opening files and home pages thru that process.  While trying several files, the desk top icons did appear with the start button and bottom bar.   At that point, I tried to run the Trend Micro program and it would not run.  I was able to access the internet via Netzero, but I could not take any action due to the Trend program window continually popping up with a message that a risk to my system existed.  Then the system automatically restarted and when the restart was completed, it had the same blank screen.  I tried to reproduce the steps that I took to get the desk top icons back, but could not do so.    I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it......Any help is appreciated.

Run the virus scan and adware removers in SAFE MODE. Also empty out your internet cache.

Thanks for the information.  Can you describe how I get to 'safe mode' when I have nothing but a blank screen?  Would that be easy to find in the task manager?

Safe mode is accessed by pressing the F-8 key on start up. You have evil-ware in the system, once you are in safe mode go to start run and type in msconfig, go to the start up tab and disable all. restart the computer and you should be ok. If something is not working, go back to msconfig and check the items that you want running, check my profile for my web site if you want further instructions.
