Chris,

'hta' files are a known vector for pc infections; it almost sounds like 'lop'.

-

Post up a HiJackThis log and let's see what you've got.

Mike.

Chris,

I sure can...

After you run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then click "Save log" (it'll be the same button). When Notepad pops-up with a copy of your log, select all the text (Edit | Select all), then copy/paste it back as a reply to this post. Then close both Notepad and HiJackThis.

Mike.

Let me just get you started on this first pass.

These entries can go, tick the box in HJT next to these entries.

do a search and make sure this file is really missing before deleteing it.

With all applications except your HJT program closed, hit the FIX button.

Reboot and repost a new log.

Chris,

I left these entry(s) alone on this pass. I'm assuming these are your home and start pages:

http://www.ntlworld.com/indexBroadband.php

Let me know if we need to remove these? Did you also uninstall Spybot?

-

Let's get started...

Download, then unzip to " C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.0. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution ( if provided in this post). This version has features that might help in 'cleaning' up your system.

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) then following, if present:

TIBS

Now, let's run HiJackThis, then:

1.  click "Config..."
2.  click "Misc Tools"
3.  click "Delete a file on reboot"
4.  browse to, then double-click on each of the file(s) below, one at a time, if present:

   C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe

5.  when prompted to "Reboot Now", after selecting each file, select "No"

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://69.50.160.100/

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr6/uk/*http://uk.docs.yahoo.com/info/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/ymsgr6/uk/*http://www.yahoo.co.uk

O2 - BHO: (no name) - s - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - SlimBho2.dll' - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tibs3] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log.

Mike.

Chris,

That log look alot better - good work! Now we just need to get rid of the ''Ghost of Mr. Tibs" and we should be ready for cleanup.

Run HiJackThis then:
1.  Click " Config..."
2.  Click " Misc Tools"
3.  Click " Open Process manager"
-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Do "Start | Search..." and post back the results for "search all files and folders" for *tibs3* .

Mike.

HI there,

I'm not sure what's going on with this now. I managed to get rid of the Home Search page, but after doing the things you recommended it has returned!!!

I can't find the 'tibs3' file anywhere either, help!

This is my latest HiJackThis log:

Chris,

That's how some of these infections go - as they go down, they'll usually throw something else back out. If you ever get the time, try looking up some of the program(s) i've been helping you remove and you'll begin to see what both you and i've been dealing with.

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32  /u  STHomePage.dll
regsvr32  /u  STLinks.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to a command prompt to save on the typing.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://quickmetasearch.com/?said=acc0000_ho
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://quickmetasearch.com/?said=acc0000_ho

O3 - Toolbar: 0CAT Yellow Pages - {679695BC-A811-4A9D-8CDF-BA8C795F261A} - C:\Program Files\0CAT YellowPages\STIEbar.dll (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and remove the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\STHomePage
C:\Program Files\STLinks
C:\Program Files\0CAT YellowPages

Post back a new log.

Mike.

Chris,

I think we're there! Good work! It's hard to tell just from a HiJackThis log if other 'pieces' of the infection are still left so hopefully we'll get the rest in cleanup.

Now let's do some cleanup...

1.  Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2.  Go to www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) "Auto clean", then click "Scan".

3.  Run AdAware SE Personal and "perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and "Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.

4.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

Post back in your having any more problems, and happy surfing.

Mike.
