Cannot Install Downloads
My problems started when I couldn't complete downloads. When I went to "install" what I thought was a complete download, I was unable to do it. Checking my event logger, there is reference to my browser not functioning properly. Could my system be hijacked? Would you please look at this log and tell me what problems I might/do have? Couple of things you should take care of before we do anything else:
a.) You have an outdated version of HijackThis AND you are running it from your desktop. Please see HOW TO POST A HIJACKTHIS LOG for instructions on downloading and installing the latest version of HJT. When you're finished installing please delete the older version.
b.) It appears that either your log has been edited or you have disabled startup entries. Please reenable all disabled entries (if any) and post a full log. All of this information is necessary for us to do a proper analysis.

So sorry! Yesterday was quite a rough one. We certainly can use your version of HijackThis. However, I need you to move it to a permanent folder. HijackThis keeps a backup of the changes it makes so that if necessary we can restore one or more of them.
To create a permanent folder for HijackThis please do the following:
Once you have moved HijackThis to its permanent folder, please do a fresh scan and post it back here. We'll take it from there. Once again, sorry for the momentary brain freeze. :) -- SCB

Now several new developments. My husband downloaded the new TrendHijack to his PC, placed it on a CD and I installed it on my machine that way. In the interim, my SIL stopped in (and he is no expert) but he checked and removed several of the entries from the old log. I have rebooted and so far, so good. But I don't know if all the "bad" things are gone. So now, with the new updated Hijack this, I am once again placing that log here. I hope I haven't "muddied" the waters too badly.

So I should take it by you saying "so far so good" that you are now able to download and install programs? The reason that I ask is that there was really no indication of any malware in your earlier log and there really is none now either. What concerns me a little is that there are so few entries in the start up O4 section of your log files. This usually means that some have been disabled either by using MSCONFIG or a program such as Spybot Search & Destroy. In order to get a proper analysis we need to have all of that information.
Incidentally, for future reference, you should never let anyone "Fix" anything with HijackThis unless you are certain that they know what they're doing. This is a very powerful program and used incorrectly can cripple a computer or even make it completely unusable.
If your machine is functioning normally now, for your own peace of mind, I would recommend that you download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It features a great on-demand scanner and has a paid version which also includes real-time protection.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
- Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan
- Click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
- Please save it to your desktop.
NOTE: Logs can be retrieved at a later date from the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware main screen:If Malware is found...

You are very welcome. Although it doesn't appear that I actually did anything LOL. You'd be absolutely amazed at how many times people have rendered their computer completely useless by fixing things with HijackThis (as well as some of the even more powerful tools which we use) just because they looked "funny".
It is indeed normal for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to ask for permission to access the Internet because that is how it gets its updates. It's a good idea to update and scan at regular intervals and this is one of the better programs that we recommend. Its database is updated often as is the program itself.
