cant log into windows

my computer has worked fine since i got it for college in augest but last night it decided to not let me login to windows. when i start it up a white screen comes on.its says dell coporation at the top then it it says " This computer system, #GWHL231-595B, is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password." Then on another line " Please type in the primary or administrator passward and press ." i type in the password and its says invalid. after you try typing a password in 3 times it shuts off. I left it there to see if it would do any thing and after 2 minutes it shuts off. I dont know if its a virus or the computer doesnt like me any more but i need help bad because i cant even use my computer its just a huge paper weight now.

This sounds like a BIOS password has been setup. This is not the windows logon password.

Can I ask have you left this unattended with some friends, this sound like the sort of practical joke that has been played on others before.

If so get the friends to give you the password that they have set on your system. You will need to remove that, and as you are in that type of environment, you should set your own to stop others playing with your computer in the future.

You don't give details of what model of computer you have. If you provide that others here may be able to help reset the password for you.

As I don't have that model of computer, I would recommend you post on this board for your model:-

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=insp_general

The experts there will I'm sure be able to help, and they (hardware types) may not come to this board to see this post. I don't think it sounds like a virus, and my belief is that somehow a bios password has been set.

When posting in that board post a link back to this thread so that you will not need to repeat yourself to much.

Best of luck.
