Clientman and probably coolwebsearch
Three days ago my browser was hijacked. I of course scanned for viruses and nothing was found. I checked in my Startup.ini and noted a new entry - msgked.exe. I updated Spybot and ran it and it found many Clientman entries and three that it called "possible" hijackers. (After researching these it appears to be CoolWebSearch). Unchecked the new entry, rebooted and it was back. Started running Browser Hijack Blaster that warns me when it an attempt is made. Many many since that day. Zone Alarm is showing that things are trying to call home. So far they are being blocked.
After checking on the net for information, I find that I do not have Clientman or Ipend in add/remove programs, nor is it in C:\Program Files. The registry entries it tells me to remove are not there.
I have attached my HijackThis log from last night. (Work all day - can't play lol) I rebooted just prior to running this and did not run spybot before running HijackThis. I did not remove anything, just saved the log. I sure would appreciate help in removing these parasites from my computer! Thank you so much in advance! I am not big on deleting things if I don't know what they are so I would appreciate any help in this direction. Tricia

After cleaning with the shredder in Safe Mode do this:
Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware). Use Spybot first. (1.3 version)

Reboot if asked by either program and let it complete any cleanup. Then reboot a final time after running both and run Windows Disk Cleanup: Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr

I followed the instructions. Had to do it twice as I didn't know to use selective startup when rebooting out of safe mode. Wrote down what was supposed to be checked and just rechecked that. Re-ran spybot and adaware after returning to normal bootup. Both clean. The msconfig entry is no longer checked. This is the new log. What else is infecting my system? Or by some miracle did I get it all. This was a very nerve wracking procedure for me lol. Why do those things still say about.blank?
Am downloading and installing Spyware Blaster to prevent future infestations. Thanks for the help. Now I am praying I don't have it all back again or missed crucial things. CWShredder removed quite a few entries. Then Spybot removed a bunch more. Adaware didn't find anything after spybot was run. All are up to date versions.

This is the log I just ran after manually deleting those files. I hope I am finally clean! I sure did learn a lot tonight! Could not have done it without your help!
One more question (like I haven't asked enough tonight) if I am clean now, what do I do with the files that hijackthis has in the folder - the ones it removed. Just delete?
Ran spybot again and it found nothing. :) This is a first in days!

Sometimes the shredder can't get them all...then we try manually. These hijackers are made by people with enormous greedy incentives to infect machines....and they have a large army of programmers. We have only a few to oppose them and certainly not the money resources to devote to a day by day defense.
Some of the new CWS strains are unfixable by normal means...but automated soultions will be forthcoming.
Let's do a manual deletion of the bad entries and see what develops:
In Hijackthis do a scan and check these entries:

With no other browsers or windows open click on fix checked button.
Run Disk Cleaner (type cleanmgr at Start/Run) scan drives and remove files in all category boxes.
Reboot, and run a new log. Post back here please.

I keep them for a few days just to be sure they are available for retireval if necessary...good insurance and they are small. Delete them in a week if all is well.
You look clean and hearty congratulations! Keep our fingers crossed on the about:blank issues.
1. The main cleanup programs...they are reactive...not proactive:
Spybot Search&dDestroy, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.
Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.
Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...go slow on the directions for the custom setup of Adaware:

I also like to run Windows Disk Cleanup after cleaning with those two tools. Make sure you reboot if any reboot cleanup functions of Spybot and Adaware are advised by these tools (this may happen at the end of their cleanup).
Reboot and click on Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr
I check all the selected items to be deleted here.
2. Proactive programs: Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad MSIE ActiveX scripts from installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known baddies.
3. IE-Spyad, puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentally getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

4. Don't forget keeping Windows updated. The automatic updates frequently fail so run it manually once a week or when new updates are publicized.

5. Keep your antivirus updated.

6. Practice safe computer habits. Don't click on strange email attachments thinking your AV will defend you. Usually it will. Sometimes it won't when a new virus hits the Net and definitions take hours to create by the AV vendors. There is only one defense that works 100% for the safe protection of your machine's personal data and that is timely and accurate backups of your files. Hard drives die, viruses ruin your files, and other bad things can happen (fire, theft, etc..). Offsite backups are the best.
7. Don't forget our great analysis tool Hijackthis. We have a lot of gratitude we need to show towards the author Merijn. I hope he does great things in his future endeavors and is richly rewarded for his time and expertise in providing this super program.

(for Hijackthis logs...please copy to and run Hijackthis.exe into a new folder you create in the root level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results). (don't put in a temp folder, or the Windows desktop, etc...as it needs a safe folder to keep backup logs). Also when people post here and place it on the Desktop the log usually shows their full name since their Windows user profile is commonly named with their full name. We try not to disturb your privacy. *;-)

Many many thanks for all the help you provided to me! I have spywareblaster running now. My windows updates are up to date. AV is up to date. Spybot and adaware up to date. Will be following the guidelines you posted to prevent further infections. I'll keep those files as a just in case like you suggested and delete at a later time. You have not steered me wrong yet in this matter.
You were very patient with someone who has not delved into this part of the computer until yesterday evening and that was very much appreciated. I had thought I was very careful with things like this, but now I know you can be attacked at any time, at any point and not even know it.
Thanks again! Its a good feeling to know that nasty is gone off my machine!!
