Computer behaving erratically-Could this be virus or spyware problem?

I have a Dimension 4300 with Win XP Home (Service Pack 1) and 1Gig of memory and a100 Gig hard drive. I have been experiencing problems with a CDRW Nec 7800 which I have replaced with a Plextor 760A which also doesn't work. I contacted Plextor and  ran some self test diagnostics with them. The unit passed all of the tests and the technician said that more than likely the problem is being caused by a virus or some other malware. I have always run both Norton A/V and Norton I Personal Firewall, Spybot Search and Destroy and Lavasoft AdAware S.E. and I automatically receive M/S updates.
I was able to do a posting on The Dimension Board- cd's  and dvd's on 4-22-06. I received one reply and was unable to reply to the posting after that. All attempts resulted I a message titled "Authentication Failed". I was able to send & receive  private messages however but after numerous tests where everything appears to be alright, The old or the new DVD-rom and the DVD-rw will not function . It doesn't recognize a Dvd and although it spins intermittently will not read.
I ran the following tests as shown on your forum page and got the following results:
#1 Norton Virus Detection (C: drive) - no threats found.
#2 eTrust A.V. web Scanner- showed 1 file infected,AA047397.exe, Virus-W32/Sinterl,Path--System Volume Information\restore (31414-675-6CBE-4639-8F67-^C2E39507683)\RP39.
#3 Ran M/S Software Removal Tool- No Malicious software detected.
#4 Ran XoftSpy 4.21- Received (Warning- your home or Search Page may have been Hijacked)- 2 dataminersfound- IBIS/Hunt toolbar-High threat and 2o7.net cookie file-minor annoyance.
#5 Ran Spybot Search and Destroy- No immediate threats.

Today I ran Hijack This which I  will try to try to copy to this message. I sure hope you can help me find this problem. I amnot all that familiar with troubleshooting these problems. I this doesn't work please advise me how to copy it to a posting.

OK , I reposted my HJT log to the "hijack board". Sorry for the confusion. Based on the instructions in this board, I thought I was supposed to post it here.

Thanks again,

No problem, it happens more often than you think. I noticed your post in HJT. I need you to do one more thing, Please.
Your post in the HJT forum, go back to it and click the edit button at the top of the message, select edit message, and include a description of the problem you are having to go with your log. It will be helpful to the HJT worker, and help them solve your issue quicker

Thanks

bamajim,

OK , I reposted my HJT log to the "hijack board". Sorry for the confusion. Based on the instructions in this board, I thought I was supposed to post it here. I sure hope you folks can figure out why I am having such difficulty with getting my Dvd/Cd RW working. Another item of additional information that may or may not be relevant is that for a couple of weeks now my internet provider "Roadrunner" has been unable to display its Homepage due to, according to them, a recent Microsoft update which is being worked on by Microsoft.

Thanks again,

Gerry
