Computer Slow Down Need Help to Identify Unwanted Items

I have been having problems for about a month. Thought that Norton would take care of it but obviously it hasn't. I have done disk clean and defragmented the disk numerous times. Scanned with spyware programs, etc. Still a mess. I am the only user of this computer. I own it. Any other issues you need to know?

Anyway, here is the log file from hijack.

Hello musicmom,

Welcome to the Dell forums. The good news is that I don't see any obvious Malware problems in your log. I suspect that the biggest contributor to your slowdown is coming from Norton. The Symantec products (Norton), while very popular are also very resource hungry -- which translates into slowdown of overall performance. If you open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) you can see how much memory each module uses by looking under the "Mem Usage" column header. If ya add them all up you'll see what I mean. The first thing that I would recommend is to turn off any of the Norton modules not directly related to Internet security. This would include SpeedDisk, GoBack etc.

Next, look through the information listed Here. Then pay a visit to www.blackviper.com for some very good insight as well as recommendations regarding which processes/services can be disabled depending on how you use your computer.

Just a couple of things that I would like you to check with HijackThis:

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
...(Unless you set these with a anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, or a System Administrator set them, have HiJackThis fix this.)

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C2185C03-9659-4395-BC5B-687F178F3670}: NameServer = 209.240.254.1 209.240.224.1
...(Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)

Thanks so much. I can breathe a bit easier for the time being. I am busy backing up everything that I need to save just in case I have a major problem. Will follow your advice and if it happens that I need help, I will post back in this thread. Again, thanks.

I have done all of the procedures that you suggested. So far, it seems to be working better. If you want me to post another scan, I will do so. The HKLM\System entry that you called to my attention is in fact the ISP address so I did not fix it. Appreciate your help.

Hello musicmom,

I'm glad to hear that things are running better. At this point, I don't think you need to run another scan. One thing that I should mention is that if Norton is a trial version that came with your computer, you might want to think about replacing it with something else when the trial period expires. It's not that it is such a bad program because it's not. The main problem is that over the years it has gotten so bloated it really does tend to affect overall system performance. For years I was a huge Norton fan and before that I was an equally huge McAfee fan. They both ended up eating up so much system resources that even after I maxed out my memory, it was still noticeably slow.

At any rate, that's my own opinion, although many on these forums share it. In the end, of course, everyone has to make their own decision. When your current subscription is up (trial or paid), I would be happy to point you in the direction of some much lighter weight software. There are even some very good free programs, antivirus, firewall, and Antispyware available. Please don't hesitate to let us know and anyone here will be happy to help you out.

Good luck -- SCB
:)

Unfortunately, I have about 7 months left on the subscription. Believe me, when it is near the time to renew I will be back here to request advice, if I haven't already stumbled upon it in another forum. I must say this forum is sure better than the ones I have visited over on the Windows site. Thanks.

You're very welcome. When the time comes, you'll find all of the information you will ever need over on the Virus/Spy Ware board.
