Computer system slow

Hello all,

I was steered to this site by my daughter who has raved about the help she has gotten here. I am in the process of trying to "clean" my system as much as possible. It's just overall a slow system. Slow to start and shut down, not to mention completing simple tasks like opening a program. Please tell me if any is wrong and what can I do to prevent this in the future. :)

Thank you in advance for your help,

Vannessa

Now that I don't work at Dell anymore, I can say that McAfee and AOL are eating up a huge chunk of your resources. This is probably not a good hijackthis answer, and you should probably just ignore me, but if I were you, I'd ditch AOL and McAfee, get the basic (just antivirus with no bells and whistles) PC-Cillin anti-virus and maybe Spysweeper and some other ISP. If you're on dial-up, try NetZero or People PC. If you're on high speed, you can just cut out the 20 dollar AOL bill because your net will work fine without it. I know this comment has no real place in this forum, but the truth is McAfee and AOL use up so much memory and run so many background processes (probably 10 or 15 processes between the 2 of them) that you'd be better off with a spyware infection. Call Dell on Call or go to Best Buy and ask one of the techs their honest opinion about your setup and you'll probably hear the same. You might have to drag it out of them a bit because as a representative of that company, they're not allowed to bash any of the products they carry. Either solution will cost you around 100 bucks plus the price of whatever you decide to purchase (PC-Cillin and Spysweeper are around 30 to 40 dollars each for the software and a one year subscription to that service). Other than that, you can add more RAM to your computer and probably shut down some services and programs that you don't use everyday. MSCONFIG will allow you to do that. I don't see anything in the log other than a search assistant, which may just be part of AOL. Honestly, I'd try Dell on Call or Geek Squad. I've worked for both and can tell you that if you get a good tech, you can really get some honest help. They also both garuntee their work and basically force the tech to do a good job or he looks bad and spends extra time redoing the work, so its win-win if you just demand good service. Also, depending on how old your system is and how its used, you may go through Add/Remove programs and start getting rid of old games and stuff that you never use anymore. I know pleanty of people who install stuff and never use it so it just bogs down the system. You may try updating and running McAfee scans and using the Defrag tool (right click the hard drive in My Computer, go to Properties, click the Tools tab at the top, and click the button that says Defragmentation. It will take around 30 minutes to run). Over all, it sounds like a tune-up and/or upgrade is your answer.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Please submit one additional log for me:

1. Start HijackThis

2. Click on the Config button

3. Click on the Misc Tools button

4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen.

Click on the Save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply in this topic.

Please follow the instructions posted by zbestwun2001. The clutter needs to be cleaned before additional troubleshooting is done.

OK, you got everything, do you notice an improvement in your performance?

We will do a couple more need processes:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Next:

Download and scan with CCleaner
Select the BASIC version. HERE
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK " Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:

o Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
o Clean all entries in the "System" section.
o Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
o Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
o Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
o Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
o Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
o Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click " exit" when done.
REBOOT.

Now reboot and post a new HJT log, and tell me if you notice a difference. Also, you didn't supply me with your system specifications...please let me know that also.

Also before you post the HJT log, please follow these intructions:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

  1. Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Select Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'
  3. Right click on AVG AS in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  4. Press "OK".
  5. In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG anti-spyware guard.
  6. When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  7. In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  8. From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  9. Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
  10. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG AS and update the definition files.
  11. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG AS Full database installer from here.
    • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
      • Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet. We will shortly.

        Double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press " Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
