My control panel in the start menu is still missing but I don't get redirected to other websites. How can I retrieve my control panel button in my start menu? I still cannot get inside of my add/remove program. It's still saying that I need to contact the system administrator which is me. Could someone help me with this please?

Sorry for the delayed response but the Dell web site failed (for whatever reason) to send me an email notification from your last reply. I should say, there was nothing about the last instruction that I gave which would account for the sudden resolution to your redirect issue. Can you tell me if you had done anything else which might account for this? Did you run some sort of scanning utility or are you receiving help on some other forum? Are you able to update your on board Symantec product? You have quite a bit of malicious software on board...some of which is uninstallable, some not. At this point, your control panel access would have no impact that would be readily noticeable.

We will need to use one of the big guns to remove these programs and to restore the system to a clean state.

Also on your next reply, please let me know if you have your Windows installation CD handy...not to worry, I'm not suggesting we reinstall the operating system but we may just need it in case we find there is some file corrupted for which there is no other good copy available. My next response will depend on your answers. Thanks!

There is no other forum I'm using to help me with this problem I'm having with my computer. The only thing I did was what you sent me to do so your guess is as good as mine as to what happened to the redirection. I do have Norton which does an automatic screen when I'm in idle but thats all I can tell you. I thought you did something to stop that from happening. When I do my Live Update nothing is shown on the result board.

Yes I still having everything my computer came with and if I do have to re- install my operation system to have my computer back to normal then thats fine with me. All of these problems is causing me to have a very bad headache and it's also putting a strain on my work.

OK, before we do anything else then, I would need to see the latest log you can find from your Symantec antivirus product. Open the application and navigate to the logging feature. Locate the log from the latest scan. Post back the contents of that log. It would be dated on or after the date of my posting which gave the instruction for the .reg file. Thanks!

Yeah I'm still here just trying to juggle this and my household at the same time. I had to lay off of this for a few days because I have a newborn now and he is making me give all my time to him for now. I tried posting the last scan but it seems it won't let me post it to this forum and when I looked at it I saw that there was a virus that my scan detected and cleared it after you gave me the instructions before. It was a Trojan Horse virus but like I said my automatic scan picked up on it and cleared it. I'll be waiting for your response so we could try to get my computer back to normal

We're going to use windows to see if we can fix this. We'll perform two separate things...one is a check of the disk for errors that windows will find and fix automatically. The other is a check of the system's critical core files to locate any missing or corrupt files. Windows will complain when it finds one and ask that you insert your Installation CD. In that case, Windows will locate and copy the missing/corrupt file/s from the CD and place it/them back where they belong.

First, let's run the disk check...To run the chkdsk utility:

• Click Start-->My Computer-->Right Click on C:/ Drive
• Select "Properties" then click the "Tools" Tab.
• Under Error Checking click the "Check Now" button.
• Under Check Disk Options put a check in Both boxes then Click Start.
• Click Yes then Click OK and reboot the system.

When the system starts up the chkdsk utility begins checking the disk for errors. The scan may take quite some time so be patient.

When the scan completes, Windows will reboot automatically.

You can view the results in the event log if you like:

Ok, I did both of the scans and still nothing happened. I was hoping that something would happen with those scans but nothing happened as I said. When I did the disk scan there wasn't any errors found and the same with the other scan. What else could be done about this? I am almost on the verge of getting rid of this computer and getting a brand new one because I have no more control over my settings. Please help!!!

Tell me when was your last disk cleanup and defrag...and when is the last time you updated the Symantec product you have and ran a complete system scan?

The last time I did a disk cleanup and defrag was probably 3 months ago and my Symantec product updates on a daily basis. The last time I did a full system scan was two weeks ago

OK, your cleanup and defrag was far too long ago. Also, your virus scan should be performed once a week. Let's do things in the order presented here:

Download and scan with CCleaner (The "Slim" version...Scroll down to the bottom download link.

• Before first use, select Options-->Advanced and UNCHECK the option for Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours

Then select the items you wish to clean up:

• In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
  ***Note***
  Checking "Cookies" will remove problem spyware cookies and help to speed up other spyware/adware/malware scans.
  This will mean however, the next time you click on a web page where you have signed in before, you will have to re-enter your user I.D. and password.
• Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
• A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
• Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
• Click "exit" when done.

Next, please download MyDefrag to your desktop. Double-click the file to install the program, then double-click the "MyDefrag.exe" to run the program. Click on "Optimize Weekly" and check the box for your C: drive. Next, click the Run button at the bottom. This scan is normally quite fast but considering that it has been three months since your last defrag, it may take some time. With this free utility however, you may still use the system while the optimization is running...just minimize the program to the system tray and allow it to complete. When it does, it will just disappear from the screen. Please remember to reboot when the scan completes.

When the system comes back up, please run a manual update to your on board Symantec product then reboot the computer into Safe mode. Once in safe mode and logged on as 'Administrator', please run a complete system scan using the Norton Antivirus program. Allow the scan to complete and do nothing else with the computer when this scan is underway. Allow the software to quarantine whatever it complains of. When finished reboot back to your normal windows user mode and post back your results. Thanks!

Ok I did everyhing and nothing has changed.My control panel is still not accessible and it's still saying that I have to contact the system admin to gain access. My Norton Antivirus full system scan didn't show anything. I ran it in safemode and rebooted the system in normal mode but nothing has changed. What else can be done about this?

Quite a bit...but we need to take a deeper look at things using other, more in depth scanning capabilities to see things that hijackthis doesn't.

Step 1

Please download the free utility DDS...You will find a download from Here, Here, or Here.


Disable any script blocker you may have running, then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

• When it completes, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
• Save both reports to your desktop.

Step 2
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.

• Extract the contents of the zipped file to your desktop
• Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please agree to do so
• If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
• In the right panel, you will see several boxes that, by default, have already been checked. Please uncheck the following ...
  • Sections
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All <--don't miss this one
• Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
• Once the scan completes, click on the button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

Do NOT take any action on any of these "<--- ROOKIT" entries without proper guidance from an expert user.
