OK, thanks. Since the problem happens every login, I have attached the initial HijackThis log from this morning, prior to deleting and scanning. I have to safe-boot and scan to get my browser back, and it takes awhile. Also, everything I am doing is with system restore turned off, so let me know if that is how I should proceed.
Thanks again,
Pers

Ok Mike, looks like we are getting somewhere. I did what you said, started in safe mode, deleted the files, rebooted in normal mode, and the files were not in my explorer tree (and my browser actually opened). I ran hijackthis 1.98.2, and here is the new log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 6:09:28 PM, on 11/11/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Ok, let's see if we can keep the re-infector from coming back...
Go to "
Task Manager", then locate and 'end' the following tasks:
MSMSGSVC.exe
Run
HiJackThis, click "
Config...", then "
Misc Tools", then "
Delete a file on reboot...", Locate and double-click on
C:\WINDOWS\System\MSMSGSVC.exe, then "
No" (
don't reboot just yet).
Run
HiJackThis, click "
Scan", then check(tick) the following entry(s), if present:
Whenever I have someone fix any problems using HiJackThis, I always have them reboot their computer as a final step. This let's me know, if the problems come back, that something else is running that's causing the re-infection, other than what was just fixed; like a super hidden-dll.
Maybe the log and fix somehow got crossed in the previous posts. Post back a new log and let's see what we've got.
OK, quick question though. I have not re-booted since my last post. I checked task manager and the MSMSGSVC.exe is not there, and subsequently when I run hijack this it is not there. Should I reboot and see if it comes back, or just assume its gone and run hijackthis and proceed with the scan from your last post?
Thanks, I feel like we are close, so I don't want to do anything out of step.
OK...I rebooted, (browser home page was ok), but Webroot Spysweeper opens in startup and it did alert me to a home page change, but my IE opened without a problem which is a huge change from before! I checked task manager just to be sure, and re-ran hijackthis...here are the results:

Pers2217,
Sorry, I didn't catch this with the first pass, but when you post back a new log, please use HiJackThis version 1.98.2.

Pers2217,
Good! I hope we've gotten it...
Mike.
