Detected Spyware! System error #384

Question

I'm having trouble w/ my computer.  I really don't have experience w/ computers, so I hope someone can help me.  When I log onto the internet, I'm taken to a blue screen that says, 'Dectected Spyware!  System error #384'  This screen contains links to Spy Sheriff.  I disabled my messenger service and system restore.  I downloaded CWShredder, Adaware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, a-squared, and hijackthis.  I restarted my computer in safemode, and then I ran all the programs.  Initially, the programs detected many errors.  After running the programs and restarting my computer multiple times, I still get the blue screen with the spyware warning.  Some of the names associated with the problems were 'trojan-downloader.win32', 'surfside kick', 'web-nexus', 'vx2.lookatme', 'clkoptimizer', 'trojan.startpage.gen'.  Again, I am not computer literate, and I do not know if this sounds familiar to anyone.   Please let me know how to fix this.  I am a poor college student, so I'd prefer to fix it with freeware.  Also, as a worst case scenario, can I just reformat my hard drive to eliminate the problem?

Update and run Search&Destroy (SpyBot). It should find the Spy Sheriff and others. When it's done fix all it finds.

Then open Control Panel and click on Display, click Desktop and reset your Wallpaper (Background), click Apply then OK.

Then on Desktop right click and place the mouse pointer on" Arrange Icons by" then click Show desktop Icons.

Yes a Clean install of Windows will get rid of it but it will wipe out all Data and settings, so backup all your STUFF.
