DrWatson Postmortem Debugger issues...

Greetings,

First time user here. Over the past few days, we've been having increasing issues/problems with an error screen which shows up shortly after starting windows (Windows XP SP2). We get the "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger" screen which (kindly) apologizes for any inconveinience, then locks up our PC.

I am an adept user, but definitely NOT a techie... so if you can offer advise, please 'dumb it down' for me.

I followed instructions to download HJT and post the following log. Can anyone tell me how to resolve my DrWatson issues?

Thanks much in advance!

Hi and welcome
Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

Run HiJackThis

1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:
C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

UNLESS YOU CONNECT VIA PROXY SERVER TICK THE NEXT 2 ENTRIES
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = sas.r4.attbi.com:8000
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = sas.r4.attbi.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C658CEE0-7F43-4B48-AEB5-36EF433513AC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D35D808B-16DD-4572-861B-44966B93247B} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winshost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winshost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
... (Unless you've set these with a anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, have HiJackThis fix this.)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...
C:\Program Files\winupdates

files...
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winshost.exe

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".

Reboot and post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Steve-

Thanks! I appreciate your quick response & easy to follow advice.

I followed everything you posted & it appears the Dr Watson problem has been solved - rebooted just fine, no more error screens & things appear to be operating quickly & without problem!!

Only one hick-up (which may or may not be a problem). While running the HiHackThis "Fix Checked" process, I got the following message in an error screen (which doesn't appear to have prevented your solution working):

===========

Unexpected Error Occured!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number)in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clipboard.

===========

I will copy the message to the address requested, and refer them to this post.

Thanks again, I hope your advise will aid others as well!

fabdad,

Looks go to me, let's clean the system up.

This is my normal post for when you are clean - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Here are some last minute instructions.

  • Download and run CleanUp and clean up all the junk we have left.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  • You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      7. Use an Anti Virus Software
        - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
      8. Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

      9. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

      10. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
      11. Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

      12. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

      13. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
      14. This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
        Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

      15. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
      16. Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

      17. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
      18. Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

      19. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
      20. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Gotta say it again, Thanks a bunch Steve. My daughter told me at dinner tonight that she thought the computer (a 4 year old Gateway) was 'running better than ever'.

I was unable to download your CleanUp software. Got an error message telling me the connection was refused when I clicked the link at your site (in both IE and Mozilla, my defaul browser). I'd like to try this (your) program, since your advice worked so well -- I suspect your software would too!

Thanks again, and rich blessings to you,
      -fabdad
