dvd drive problems 'please insert disk' error, also norton antivirus problems!

I've been trying to sort out this problem for a while now, and have found out there seem to be more things wrong with my computer than I first thought! Basically I have been trying to install a new Norton Antivirus software from a cdrom to upgrade from the 2002 version; but recently have found that whenever I insert a cdrom or audio cd into the d drive it won't read the disks, the disk spins and then stops, and nothing at all loads. When I try double clicking on the d drive in "My Computer" it comes up with the "Please insert disk into drive d" message, even though the disk is in the drive. It is a dvd drive and can play dvds fine, but i'm sure I can remember it used to come up as a cdrom drive when displayed in "my computer", somehow it seems to have changed.

As I said in the other post my Norton Antivirus seems to have died, so I have downloaded loads of spyware blockers (Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destory) and have also run the Housecall Virus scan. Is there any other virus scans that you would suggest I do? And maybe the problem with the d drive is caused by a virus?

This is not going to solve your drive problem, but I want to take a moment to point out what seems to be a potential source of confusion on your part:   You indicated here 'm y Norton Antivirus seems to have died'... and in your other posting 'and I have been forced to remove it, so now I have no antivirus software (arrgh) I'm a bit stuck now'.  And you then went on to say ' so I have downloaded loads of spyware blockers (Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy) and have also run the Housecall Virus scan'.   Please be advised that there is a fundamental difference between anti-VIRUS programs (like your Norton), and anti-SPYWARE (& anti-ADWARE) programs.  While it's possible that they may overlap coverage in a few instances, in general, anti-virus programs watch out for VIRUSES/WORMS/TROJANS, while anti-adware programs try to assist with unwanted popups/ADVERTISEMENTS as well as various forms of spyware/'malware'.   By removing your norton a/v, you have left your system UNprotected against viruses, even if you have downloaded 'loads' of spyware blockers.  YOU MUST INSTALL SOME A/V PROGRAM (Norton, or otherwise) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!  If you can't get your Norton to work again, you can always download one of the free anti-virus programs, such as AVG or AVAST, either as a 'temporary' stop-gap, or even as your 'permanent' solution.   Also, please be aware that while most anti/Virus program offers prevention/protection against getting infected by a virus in the first place (as well as the ability to run a scan, on-demand, to catch a virus 'after the fact'), the 'average' anti-spyware program is NOT preventative --- rather, it simply scans for, and tries to remove, adware/spyware that has already infiltrated your system.    Ad-Aware (at least, the free version) scans, but does not prevent.  SpyBot (unless you turn-on the 'tea-timer' feature) likewise scans, but does not prevent.  Some programs do offer spyware prevention... i'm sure other people can offer you several suggestions.   by the way, the Housecall Virus scan you mentioned is also simply a scan, after the fact... even if it said you're 'clean' today, it does nothing to protect you in the future. good move.   you may find AVG to be fully satisfactory... many here like it a lot.   just keep in mind, when/if you decide to go back to Norton, you should uninstall the AVG... not good to run two A/V programs simultaneously.

Please try to run Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot again as well.

Make sure you have the latest updates.... as of the moment, for Ad-Aware SE (version 1.05) it's 1R33 16.03.2005, for Spybot (version 1.3) it's 2005-03-19.
